Libya rebels say shoot down Gaddafi's warplanes
A rebel spokesman said on Thursday Libyan rebel forces had shot down two government warplanes raiding Benghazi in the east of the country.
There was no immediate comment from official sources.
A witness said residents in the city celebrated the shooting down of the two planes which they saw as victories by the rebels over Muammar Gaddafi's forces. But the witness was unable to reach the locations where the planes reportedly came down.
"Two Gaddafi fighter planes were shot down by the rebels, one in the morning that tried to raid Benina airport and another in the Buatani area on the outskirts of Benghazi. There were no casualties," Essam Gheriani, a spokesman for the rebel movement in Benghazi said.

Adam Curtis - A IS FOR ATOM - Film
I am sorry I haven't put anything up recently. I have been busy finishing a new series of films for BBC-2
As a background to the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant I am putting up a film I made a while ago called A is for Atom. It was part of a series about politics and science called Pandora's Box.
The film shows that from very early on - as early as 1964 - US government officials knew that there were serious potential dangers with the design of the type of reactor that was used to build the Fukushima Daiichi plant. But that their warnings were repeatedly ignored.

The statement from NATO chief Rasmussen
" Time is of the essence, time is rapidly running out, but I don't think it's too late. Very much will depend on the UN Security Council decision. "
"I can imagine the international community and the United Nations standing strongly together behind the Libyan people if the weakened regime continues to attack its own people."
"It is absolutely outrageous to see the Libyan regime systematically attack its own civilian population. These acts may amount to crimes against humanity."

Diplomats discussing "range of options" beyond no-fly zone
As Libyan government forces barreled down on rebels, the United Nations Security Council was unable to agree Wednesday on a resolution to protect civilians with a no-fly zone or possibly other measures including air strikes.
A Security Council diplomat told CNN that such strikes are among a "range of options" being discussed as diplomats focused on what should be in a resolution.
Seven hours of negotiations at the U.N. failed to result in unity on a draft resolution despite the impassioned appeals of Libyans fighting the military might of the Gadhafi regime.

Britain says action against Col Gaddafi is 'imperative' as US backs no-fly zone
The United States ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, said last night that America was prepared to support the imposition of a no-fly zone as part of a ''broad range of actions'' to force the regime to stop the killing.
After days of stalling by the US over backing for a no-fly zone, diplomats said they were now talking of going even further - with airstrikes and the naval bombardment of Gaddafi's forces to help the rebels.
