The question has hovered over the Libyan uprising from the moment the first tank commander defected to join his cousins protesting in the streets of Benghazi: Is the battle for Libya the clash of a brutal dictator against a democratic opposition, or is it fundamentally a tribal civil war?

Three journalists who went missing in eastern Libya more than 72 hours ago have been arrested by Gaddafi troops, the AFP news agency reports.
AFP reporter Dave Clark and photographer Roberto Schmidt were arrested along with Getty photographer Joe Raedle, their driver says.

Libyan rebellion reveals chaos of civilians at war
The planes were barely out of earshot when the charge of the ad hoc motorised cavalry began.
The young fighters, the "shabab" as they proudly proclaim themselves, piled on to scores of pick up trucks with mounted machine guns and squeezed in to saloon cars with their Kalashnikovs hanging out of the windows. Some had no more than old hunting rifles. One man was waving a bayonet as his only weapon.

Gaddafi sitting on 143 tonnes of gold in Libya
Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi is reportedly sitting on a 143.8-tonne $6.4-billion pot of gold - enough to pay mercenaries to fight for him for years.
The gold bullion - held by the Libyan central bank and controlled by Colonel Gaddafi - is among the 25 largest reserves in the world, the Financial Times reported, citing the International Monetary Fund.

Der israelische Ex-Präsident Katzav ist am Dienstag zu sieben Jahren Haft wegen Sexualverbrechen verurteilt worden. Katzav war zuvor der Vergewaltigung einer Mitarbeiterin in zwei Fällen sowie der sexuellen Belästigung in weiteren Fällen für schuldig befunden worden. Katzav hatte das Verfahren selbst ausgelöst und stets auf seiner Unschuld beharrt. Im Zuge der Ermittlungen war er allerdings immer mehr unter Druck geraten.

The armed forces will not hesitate in carrying out their duties ... and standing in the face of any coup plans against constitutional legitimacy.
Saleh headed the meeting of the National Defence Council.

FRENCH FIGHTER PLANES, HUMAN SHIELDS IN MISURATA
French air operations resumed this morning in Libya, reports the French Defence Ministry. French planes did not fly over Libya during the night but took off again early this morning, noted French Defence Ministry spokesman Thierry Burkhard. Their mission is to enforce the no-fly zone imposed on Libya. The planes, which leave from bases on French territory, noted the French Defence Ministry, have an approximately three-hour flight to arrive at the area of operations.
A French government spokesman said that he did not have any information on civilian casualties in the attacks on Libya.
