Eman al-Obeidi has been released by Gaddafi forces. Her mother tells reporters she is proud of her daughter

The mother of a woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel and said that she had been raped by government militiamen hailed her daughter as a hero Sunday and said government officials offered her money and a house to change her story.

Aisha Ahmed, contacted by telephone at her home in Tobruk, in the rebel-held eastern part of the country, said she was proud of the courage displayed by her daughter, Iman al-Obaidi, whose outburst Saturday was broadcast worldwide.

“I am very happy, very proud,” said Ahmed, who described her daughter as a 26-year-old law student in Tripoli.

UPDATE ON EMAN: There are unconfirmed claims by the Gaddafi Regime that Eman was released and is safe. There is NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE to support their claims. The Regime's history with making false statements gives us EVERY REASON to fear for her safety and continue to demand her immediate release.

Libyan Woman Struggles to Tell Media of Her Rape

update:

Family of Eman Al-Obeidi DENY claims she is free, sister now missing too

Libyan press has announced that Eman has now been freed, and is resting at home with her mother and sisters. She may be giving an interview to one or two female reporters, they promised. A Gadaffi spokesman has told foreign press that five men, one of whom may be the son of a top-ranking Police Officer, have been arrested in connection with the alleged beating, torture and rape of Eman Al-Obeidi. None of this can be confirmed by journalists, who are held captive in the hotel in Tripoli where the woman approached them Saturday. Her family, however, deny that this is true. In fact, they say, her sister Amal has also been detained. They received a phone call last night from a government spokesman at three a.m. offering them a new house, money, anything they wished as long as they retracted Eman's statement.

Operation Odyssey Dawn explained (Day 8)

And there was (day)light. This could be the motto of Day 7 which saw an increased activity of US tactical aircraft from the early morning: quite a change if we think that, since the beginning of Odyssey Dawn, American tacair had flown almost only at night. The reason could be the following: since USAFE F-15Es and USMC AV-8Bs are involved in the “civilian protection” task (hence, they strike ground targets, see yesterday debrief for more info) they operated at night and at higher altitudes until air power of the coalition (almost) completely cancelled the Libyan air defences reducing the SAM and MANPADS threat to the point that even A-10s and AC-130U gunship 4SOS/16SOW could be deployed to the theatre, with the latter performing the first missions into the Libyan territory right after their arrival in Sigonella. SEAD missions were intensified in the morning, with multiple Wild Weasel flights of both F-16s and EA-18G Growlers out of Aviano airbase, probably securing the airspace for those coalition aircraft that attacked Sabha airbase, where Gaddafi’s forces were reported to be killing locals civilians. In spite of the amount of SEAD missions flown in the Libyan airspace, no HARM was reported to be fired by the three SEAD platform available in theatre: F-16CJs of the 480FS/52FW, the EA-18Gs of the USN VAQ-132 (both at Aviano), and the Tornado ECRs of the 155° Gruppo/50° Stormo of the Italian Air Force, deployed to Trapani.

Extreme radiation detected at No.2 reactor

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it has detected radioactive materials 10-million-times normal levels in water at the No.2 reactor complex of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The plant operator, known as TEPCO, says it measured 2.9-billion becquerels of radiation per one cubic centimeter of water from the basement of the turbine building attached to the Number 2 reactor.
