Vorratsdaten: Der Funkmast als Wachturm
Der Grünenpolitiker Malte Spitz ist viel unterwegs. Er nutzt soziale Netzwerke, um über sich und seine Arbeit beim Bundesvorstand der Partei zu berichten, und er schaltet selten sein Mobiltelefon aus. Die sechs Monate Vorratsdaten, die er ZEIT ONLINE zur Verfügung gestellt hat, bedeuteten daher 35.830 aufgezeichneten Verbindungen – ein eindeutiges Bewegungsprofil.
Spitz hatte im August 2009 die Herausgabe seiner Daten eingeklagt. Er hatte Erfolg und die Telekom übergab ihm sechs Monate seiner Vorratsdaten von August 2009 bis Februar 2010. Wir veröffentlichen ihn hier als Google Doc (ohne die Telefon-, Geräte- und Kartennummern von Spitz).

German Green extracts tracking info from mobile operator
Mobile phones are tracking devices that reveal much about our lives. One look at our interactive map of data provided by the Green party politician Malte Spitz shows why.
The seminal electronic band Kraftwerk was well ahead of the curve musically, but even the lyrics to their 1981 song "Computerwelt" can seem uncannily prescient. While government authorities like the BKA, Germany’s Federal Office of Criminal Investigation, (and the country’s database of traffic violations in Flensburg) do indeed have a trove of information about us, the greatest source of data about our lives is much more banal. The real snitch is in our pocket – our own mobile phone betrays us. That’s why the Chaos Computer Club has rechristened the powerful mini-computers we carry around with us as "tracking devices" revealing where we’ve been and what we’ve been doing.

Trotz der internationalen Luftangriffe werden Libyens Rebellen immer wieder von Gaddafis Soldaten zurückgeworfen - die entscheidende Hilfe könnten nun Geheimdienste liefern: Sowohl die amerikanische CIA als auch britische Agenten operieren bereits vor Ort. Schickt der Westen bald auch Waffen?

Libyens Außenminister flieht nach London
Der libysche Außenminister Mussa Kussa hat dem Machthaber Al-Gaddafi die Gefolgschaft gekündigt und ist nach Großbritannien geflohen. Kussa sei am Abend in Großbritannien angekommen, teilte die britische Regierung mit. Er sei geflohen, weil er gegen Angriffe auf die Zivilbevölkerung gewesen sei. Zuvor hatte es geheißen, Kussa habe sich auf der tunesischen Ferieninsel Dscherba zu einem Geheimtreffen mit französischen Regierungsbeamten eingefunden.

Moussa Koussa, the Lockerbie spymaster who defected
Moussa Koussa, the Libyan foreign minister, last night defected from Col Muammar Gaddafi's government after flying to Britain, telling officials he was "no longer willing" to serve the regime.
Mr Koussa flew from Tunisia, where he had been on a diplomatic mission, and landed at Farnborough airport before being shuttled to London for immediate talks with high-ranking Foreign Office officials.
Mr Koussa was one of the leading figures in Col Gaddafi's government and one of the architects of Libya's recent rehabilitation in the eyes of the international community.

Journalists detained in Bahrain, Egypt
A CNN crew was detained today in Manama while interviewing a prominent Bahraini human rights defender, according to a Twitter posting by the network and a CPJ interview. The detentions come amid a recent series of repressive actions by the Bahraini government, which included today's arrest of a well-known blogger. Anti-press actions were also reported in Egypt, Syria, and Libya, CPJ research shows.
CNN tweeted this evening from Bahrain that a crew had been detained at the home of Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights. Rajab told CPJ that the crew included CNN journalists Scott Bronstein and Taryn Fixel, along with an unidentified cameraman. He said a fourth journalist, an unidentified documentary filmmaker, was also detained.

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

BBC's Orla Guerin on the frontlines in Libya
Rebels in Libya are retreating from their former strongholds along the eastern coast as they come under fire from Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces.
The rebels have now lost the key oil port of Ras Lanuf and the nearby town of Bin Jawad, and are also in full retreat from Brega.

Operation Odyssey Dawn/Ellamy/Harmattan/Mobile - Allied assets deployed to Libya
As military operations conducted to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973 continue, keeping track of what assets are being used where and by whom becomes increasingly difficult.
In order to ensure informed debate on this particular conflict, the Defence and Military Analysis Programme of the IISS has compiled the following list of those air and naval assets known or believed to have been either used or made available for use in operations to date.
As with all military operations, reliable intelligence is difficult to secure. Given the current fluidity of the conflict, the information is also transitory. As such, the list below is accurate to the best of the IISS’ ability as of 30 March 2011.

The Marines Are Using Weather Balloons to Communicate With Fighters Out of Radio Range
What do you do when your fighter jets are out of radio range in enemy territory? Normally, you'd use AWACS airplanes to relay communications back and forth. But, in the Libyan war, the Marines are using a new method: Weather balloons.
