Post-Revolt Tunisia Can Alter E-Mail With `Big Brother' Software
In Tunisia, Big Brother goes by an alias: Ammar 404.
A play on the “Error 404” message for blocked websites, Tunisian bloggers dreamed him up as a fictional front man for the sprawling surveillance state of former ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Aided directly and indirectly by American and European suppliers, Ammar 404 took control of virtually all electronic communication in Tunisia and turned lives upside down -- even changing the content of e-mails in transit. In this world, Tunisians of all stripes could never be sure if e-mails arrived as sent or at all, or who was reading them.

Ending the Global War on Drugs
Ever since the War on Drugs, everything has hit the fan," says Romesh Bhattacharji, former Narcotics Commissioner of India. Rather than continue the unnecessary and costly drug war, Bhattacharji advises the United States to simply "Relax, take it easy, [and] tolerate."
Last month, at the Cato Institute's "Ending the Global War on Drugs" conference, Bhattacharji's sentiments were echoed by ex-drug czars, cops, politicians, intellectuals, liberal and conservative journalists, and even the former President of Brazil.

Selling the Drug War for $3 Billion? How the Pentagon Will Privatize an International War on Drugs
In part of a move to transfer tactics from the "war on terror" to the "war on drugs", the Pentagon is paying private security firms millions to fight the drug war internationally.
There is an increasing perception that the war on drugs is simply unwinnable. The scandalous death toll and socioeconomic impact so far suffered in the countries implicated either as producers or as transit routes has led to such assessment.
Inadequate, inefficient combat strategies and a continuously renewed global net of corruption are part of the complex problem.

In Japan waren unmittelbar nach der Fukushima-Katastrophe die Menschen außerhalb der Sperrzone vermutlich der höchsten Strahlung ausgesetzt.
Diese Anwohner hätten eine Belastung von 19 Millisievert ertragen müssen, was nur knapp unter dem von der internationalen Atomsicherheitsbehörde festgelegten jährlichen Grenzwert liege, kündigte die Regionalregierung am Dienstag an. Die höchste Strahlenkonzentration sei in den ersten vier Monaten nach dem Unglück vom 11. März in der Stadt Iitate rund 40 Kilometer nordwestlich der Atomanlage gemessen worden.

Der mutmaßliche Großbetrug mit gefälschten Biolebensmitteln in Italien hat Österreich erreicht: Wie das Gesundheitsministerium am Dienstag bekanntgab, wurden mehrere hundert Tonnen Soja und in geringerem Umfang Raps von zwei der verdächtigen Unternehmen an zwei weiterverarbeitende Betriebe in Österreich geliefert. Italienische Behörden hatten vergangene Woche mehrere Chefs von Lebensmittelkonzernen verhaftet, die Waren aus Rumänien importiert und als „bio“ deklariert hatten.

Großexperiment: Neue Hinweise auf "Gottesteilchen" - Higgs-Boson noch nicht gefunden
Gebannt haben Wissenschaftler aus aller Welt am Dienstag in die Schweiz geschaut: Nicht weniger als eine physikalische Sensation war von den Mitarbeitern des Kernforschungszentrums CERN erwartet worden - nämlich die Entscheidung darüber, ob der letzte fehlende Baustein im Aufbau von Materie, das Higgs-Teilchen, nachgewiesen werden kann. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es noch zu früh für eine eindeutige Antwort ist: Zwar konnten während des Großexperiments substanzielle Hinweise auf das „Gottesteilchen“ gefunden werden, auf einen endgültigen Nachweis müssen Physiker aber wohl noch warten.

Ein freundlicher und fröhlicher Mann tötet sich selbst - mit 23 Jahren. Wie es dazu kam, zeigt die NDR-Doku "Wadim" in allen erschütternden Details. Die gnadenlose Abschiebepraxis deutscher Behörden hat den in Deutschland aufgewachsenen Letten in die Verzweiflung getrieben.

Ist Ungarn noch demokratisch? Die EU rettet Griechenland, ignoriert aber Ungarns Abdriften ins Autoritäre
Um Ungarn ist es wieder still geworden, seitdem das Land im Sommer die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft abgegeben hat. Zwar kritisierte das Europäische Parlament die im April in aller Hast verabschiedete Verfassung noch einmal vehement – aber bekanntlich hat Europa jetzt jeden Tag alle Hände voll damit zu tun, die gemeinsame Währung zu retten. Und wer sein gesamtes politisches Kapital für den Euro aufs Spiel setzt, so scheint es, der kann nicht auch noch mehr Risiken eingehen, indem er versucht, das Abdriften kleiner mitteleuropäischer Länder ins Autoritäre zu verhindern. Wenn Griechenland Europas Testfall für Solidarität ist, dann ist es Ungarn für die Demokratie, aber niemand scheint das so recht sehen zu wollen.

FBI says hackers hit key services in three US cities
The infrastructure systems of three US cities have been attacked, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
At a recent cybersecurity conference, Michael Welch, deputy assistant director of the FBI's cyber division, said hackers had accessed crucial water and power services.
The hackers could theoretically have dumped sewage into a lake or shut off the power to a shopping mall, he said.
Industrial control systems are becoming an increasing target for hackers.

Forget Taxing Marijuana; The Real Money's In Cocaine
A Harvard economist has estimated how much money states would raise by legalizing and taxing marijuana and cocaine.
In a podcast a while back, Harvard's Jeffrey Miron told us that his estimates for what California would bring in from taxing marijuana are much smaller than some of the numbers that are floating around out there (including a $1.4 billion estimate from state officials).

Scientists Create World's Smallest Steam Engine
What would be a case for the repair shop for a car engine is completely normal for a micro engine. If it sputters, this is caused by the thermal motions of the smallest particles, which interfere with its running. Researchers at the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart-based Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have now observed this with a heat engine on the micrometre scale.
