Activists and Japanese whalers clash at sea
Three activists says they have cuts and bruises after clashing with a Japanese whaling ship in the Southern Ocean.
The incident happened about 300 miles north of Mawson Peninsula off the coast of Antarctica.
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd said whaling crew used grappling hooks and a bamboo pole to strike the activists.

Mexican navy seizes huge haul of precursor chemicals
The Mexican navy says it has seized 195 tonnes of chemicals which can be used to make the drug methamphetamine.
The navy found 12 shipping containers full of the precursor chemical in the Pacific coast port of Lazaro Cardenas.

American fighter jets screamed over the Iraqi countryside heading for the MQ-1 Predator drone, while its crew in California stood by helplessly. What had begun as an ordinary reconnaissance mission was now taking a ruinous turn. In an instant, the jets attacked and then it was all over. The Predator, one of the Air Force’s workhorse hunter/killer robots, had been obliterated.

Hackers Steal $6.7M In Bank Cyber Heist
A perfectly planned and coordinated bank robbery was executed during the first three days of the new year in Johannesburg, and left the targeted South African Postbank — part of the nation's Post Office service — with a loss of some $6.7 million. The cyber gang behind the heist was obviously very well informed about the post office's IT systems, and began preparing the ground for the heist a few months before, by opening accounts in post offices across the country and compromising an employee computer in the Rustenburg Post Office

Führerschein: Pauschaler Drogenverdacht unzulässig
Wenn es um mögliche Drogensünder am Steuer geht, holen Führerscheinbehörden gern zum Rundumschlag aus. Um ein ärztliches Gutachten kommt der Betroffene sowieso nicht herum. Deshalb wird oft gern pauschal danach gefragt, ob die Gefahr besteht, dass der Autofahrer künftig wieder unter Drogeneinfluss fährt. Dieser weitgehende Gutachtenauftrag kann bei Cannabiskonsumenten rechtswidrig sein, stellt das Verwaltungsgericht Neustadt in einem aktuellen Beschluss fest.

Video: Repressionsfall Ciro P.
Der DHV dokumentiert Fälle staatlicher Verfolgung von Hanffreunden. In diesem Fall beschreibt Ciro P. wie aus einem Streit unter Nachbarn ein dreiwöchiger Gefängnisaufenthalt wurde.
Ciro P. aus Baden-Württemberg wurde von seiner Nachbarin bei der Polizei angeschwärzt. Nach einem Jahr Observation rückte die Polizei mit 6-7 Mann und Hunden an und führte eine Hausdurchsuchung durch. Der vermeintliche Grow-Raum entpuppte sich als Kinderzimmer. Gefunden wurden 4 g Cannabis und Bilder einer Pflanze, deren Anbau schon einige Jahr her war. Vor Gericht wurde Ciro erst zu 90, dann zu 60 und schlussendlich zu 45 Tagessätzen verurteilt. Der Staatsanwalt verlangte aufgrund der Nichteinsicht seiner Schuld ein möglichst hartes Urteil.

Europas Osten rückt nach rechts
Ungarn droht der Staatsbankrott, gleichzeitig driftet das Land massiv nach rechts. Jetzt leitet die EU ein Verfahren gegen Budapest ein - weil sie um die Demokratie fürchtet. Doch das Problem ist viel größer: Auch im übrigen Osteuropa sind Populisten und Nationalisten auf dem Vormarsch.
Nur anderthalb Jahre hat Viktor Orbán gebraucht. In dieser kurzen Zeit ist es dem ungarischen Regierungschef gelungen, sein Land umzukrempeln. Bürgerrechte und Pressefreiheit wurden eingeschränkt, die demokratische Gewaltenteilung ausgehebelt, eine Verfassung im Geiste des autoritär-nationalistischen Horthy-Regimes der Zwischenkriegszeit verabschiedet. Ungarn ist in der EU derzeit politisch isoliert und steht am Rand des Staatsbankrotts. Nun hat auch noch die EU-Kommission Klage eingereicht. Brüssel hält die Verfassungsreform Orbáns für einen Verstoß gegen EU-Recht - und droht damit, dem finanziell schwer angeschlagenen Land keine Hilfsgelder zu bewilligen. Eine bemerkenswerte Entwicklung für das frühere Modell- und Musterreformland, an dem sich andere Staaten der Region viele Jahre orientiert hatten.

EU raises stakes in row with Hungary
The European Union raised the stakes in a showdown with Hungary today, with the European Commission saying it would take legal action against the government over authoritarian new laws.
Prime minister Viktor Orban's conservative Fidesz party has been condemned by the international community for introducing measures that threaten the independence of the media, the judiciary and the central bank since sweeping to power in 2010.
The commision said the laws governing the central bank, the retirement age of judges and the country's data protection authority violated EU rules and needed to be changed within one month if Hungary wanted to avoid being taken to the European Court of Justice, the EU's highest court.

“Automatische Kennzeichenfahndung”: Vorratsdatenspeicherung jetzt auch von Autos
“Wir wissen wo dein Auto steht” gilt jetzt nicht mehr nur für den Schiri, sondern potentiell die gesamte Bevölkerung. Das nennt sich “Kennzeichenfahndung” und ist anscheinend gängige Praxis bei deutschen Polizeibehörden.
Am Freitag hat Fefe darauf hingewiesen, dass eine private Firma in Kalifornien durch die Gegend fährt und Kfz-Kennzeichen inklusive Standort des Autos speichert und schon 550 Millionen Datensätze hat:
Police around the country have been affixing high-tech scanners to the exterior of their patrol cars, snapping a picture of every passing license plate and automatically comparing them to databases of outstanding warrants, stolen cars and wanted bank robbers. […]
When a license plate is scanned, the driver’s geographic location is also recorded and saved, along with the date and time, each of which amounts to a record or data point. Such data collection occurs regardless of whether the driver is a wanted criminal, and the vast majority are not.
Doch wie so oft lohnt auch der Blick vor die eigene Haustür und siehe da: das gibt es auch hier. Das “Forschungsprojekt” Public Intelligence hat einen 184-Seiten starken Bericht und eine Präsentation (beide PDF) veröffentlicht, welche die polizeilichen Maßnahmen “Verkehrsdatenabfrage, Mobilfunkortung, Kennzeichenfahndung” im Auftrag des Landtag Brandenburg untersuchen.

30 Planstellen für den Staatstrojaner
Beim Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) sollen 30 Planstellen für das "Kompetenzzentrum Informationstechnische Überwachung" (CC ITÜ) geschaffen werden. Die neue Einheit soll ein eigenes Trojanerprogramm zur sogenannten "Quellen-Telekommunikationsüberwachung" entwickeln. Zusätzlich werden im Bundeshaushalt für das BKA Sachmittel in Höhe von 2,2 Millionen Euro für das CC ITÜ bereitgestellt. Dies geht aus der Antwort der Bundesregierung auf eine Kleine Anfrage (PDF-Datei) des Linken-Abgeordneten Herbert Behrens hervor.
