MegaUpload Fights Shutdown With Former Bill Clinton Attorney
Bennett is best known for defending President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal.
The New York attorney also represented other big names including Senator John McCain and President of the World Bank Group Paul Wolfowitz
“We intend to vigorously defend against these charges.” was Bennett’s only comment thus far, but fireworks can be expected in the weeks to come.

Two lessons from the Megaupload seizure
Two events this week produced some serious cognitive dissonance. First, Congressional leaders sheepishly announced that they were withdrawing (at least for the time being) two bills heavily backed by the entertainment industry — the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House – in the wake of vocal online citizen protests (and, more significantly, coordinated opposition from the powerful Silicon Valley industry). Critics insisted that these bills were dangerous because they empowered the U.S. Government, based on mere accusations of piracy and copyright infringement, to shut down websites without any real due process. But just as the celebrations began over the saving of Internet Freedom, something else happened: the U.S. Justice Department not only indicted the owners of one of the world’s largest websites, the file-sharing site Megaupload, but also seized and shut down that site, and also seized or froze millions of dollars of its assets — all based on the unproved accusations, set forth in an indictment, that the site deliberately aided copyright infringement.

MegaUpload case proves we don’t need SOPA or PIPA
It’s ironic that only a day after a massive, coordinated protest against the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy bills that have been making their way through both houses of Congress, one of the best arguments against these laws was provided by the federal government itself, in a raid on the file-sharing service known as MegaUpload. Not only did the authorities manage to shut down the site and arrest its founders without the need for either SOPA or PIPA, but the facts of the case raise even more red flags about what the government — and private companies — would be able to do to similar services under the proposed legislation.

100,000 march in Hungary pro-government rally
About 100,000 sympathizers of Hungary's government marched Saturday to parliament in support of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has come under heavy criticism from the European Union for laws seen as curbing democracy.
The long procession dubbed the "Peace March for Hungary" left Heroes' Square at 1500 GMT (10 a.m. EST) and began arriving two hours later at the Neo-Gothic legislature on the banks of the Danube River.

Nach Aufruf einer präparierten Seite wurde Server des US-Justizministeriums mit Anfragen überrollt
Neben dem DDoS-Tool Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) nutzen die Internet-Aktivisten von Anonymous offenbar eine neue Methode für Angriffe auf Server. Laut heise wurde für eine DDoS-Attacke auf das US-Justizministerium ein Link auf eine präparierte Website über Twitter verbreitet, die massenhaft Anfragen an justice.gov schickt.

Austria - Lessons from Some of the Least Malware Infected Countries in the World
I have observed that Austria has consistently had a malware infection rate below the worldwide average since we started publishing regional malware infection rates in the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR) volume 3 focused on the first half of 2007. The chart below illustrates the infection rate trend in Austria for 2009 and 2010.

Der erste unbemannte Kampfjet aus Europa wurde gestern vom Industrieteam den Vertretern der sechs Partnerländer präsentiert.
Nach Angaben von Dassault Aviation, das die Federführung in dem 2006 gestarteten Versuchsprogramm hat, wird der Beginn der Flugtests für Mitte des Jahres angestrebt.

First European experimental stealth combat drone rolled out: the nEUROn UCAV almost ready for flight
On Jan. 20, the nEUROn, the technology demonstrator for a European UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle), was officially presented by Charles Edelstenne, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation to the representatives of the countries that have been contributing to the project France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland and Greece.
The nEUROn, whose shape reminds that of the American X-47B, is the first stealth combat drone developed in Europe and was rolled out after five years of design, development, and static testing. The first engine tests will be carried out in the next weeks, while the maiden flight is expected to be conducted in mid 2012.

How and Why Anonymous Took Down the FBI's Website
On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working with police in New Zealand, arrested the leaders of the popular file sharing service MegaUpload.com and scrubbed the site from the internet, alleging that it supports widespread copyright infringement. Coming just a day after the internet's campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the raid was perceived by many netizens as a declaration of war.
Within minutes of the announcement, Twitter accounts associated with Anonymous, the shadowy hacker collective, announced #OpMegaUpload, a massive retaliation against government and entertainment industry websites.

Der X-Server von X.org enthält ab der Version 1.11, die im September letzten Jahres erschienen ist, eine pikante Schwachstelle, durch die man sich Zugriff auf einen gesperrten Rechner verschaffen kann, wie der französische Blogger Gu1 entdeckt hat. Drückt man die Tasten Strg, Alt und die Multiplikationstaste des Ziffernblocks gleichzeitig, wird der eingestellte Bildschirmschoner beendet und der Rechner entsperrt; wir konnten das Problem auf Fedora 16 nachvollziehen, bei dem die von Fedora zwischenzeitlich herausgegebene Korrektur noch nicht eingespielt war.

Endstation Panikraum - Megaupload-Gründer Kim Schmitz
Jetzt wird es eng für Kim Schmitz, alias Kim Dotcom. Ermittler haben den früheren Internet-Star und Betreiber von Megaupload in Neuseeland festgenommen. Zum Schluss verbarrikadierte er sich in seiner Luxusbehausung.
So einfach wollte Kim Schmitz sich nicht geschlagen geben. Als 80 Beamte von neuseeländischer Polizei und FBI seine "Villa Dotcom" in Auckland stürmten, flüchtete der Internetunternehmer in einen Panikraum. Schmitz habe dann eine Reihe elektronischer Schlösser betätigt und sich verbarrikadiert, berichtet der leitende Beamte Grant Wormald. Die Polizisten mussten sich den Weg freischneiden, um Schmitz festnehmen zu können.

Datenschutzrat kritisiert Datenabkommen mit USA
In Österreich steht die Verabschiedung eines Abkommens mit den USA über den Austausch von Polizeidatensätzen bevor. Grüne und FPÖ haben sich dagegen ausgesprochen. Am Freitag tagte der Datenschutzrat nochmals zu der Materie, nachdem es zuletzt im Innenausschuss zu heftiger Kritik kam. Dieser kritisiert nun, dass das Abkommen mit jedem EU-Land extra abgeschlossen wird.
Die USA sollen aufgrund eines Abkommens Zugriff auf Polizeidatensätze wie Fingerabdruckdateien und die Identitäten von Terror-Verdächtigen bekommen. Das "Abkommen über die Vertiefung der Zusammenarbeit bei der Verhinderung und Bekämpfung schwerer Straftaten" (PDF) soll im Februar im Innenausschuss behandelt werden, bevor es in den Nationalrat kommen wird. Am Freitag beschäftigte sich die Datenschutzkommission nochmals mit dem Abkommenstext.
