Acta protests break out as EU states sign up to treaty
The UK and 21 other European Union member states on Thursday signed an international copyright agreement treaty called Acta (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement), sparking more demonstrations by internet users who have protested for days both virtually and physically over fear it will lead to online censorship.
Following the signing, protesters rallied in the Polish cities of Poznan and Lublin to express their anger over the treaty. Lawmakers for the left-wing Palikot's Movement wore masks in parliament to show their dissatisfaction, while the largest opposition party the right-wing Law and Justice party called for a referendum on the matter.

Members of Monty Python's Flying Circus are reteaming for "Absolutely Anything," a sci-fi farce combining CGI and live action, with Terry Jones to direct and Mike Medavoy to produce.
Plans are for filming to begin in the U.K. this spring, with the Pythons voicing key roles as a a group of aliens who endow an earthling with the power to do "absolutely anything" to see what a mess he'll make of things -- which is precisely what happens. There's also a talking dog named Dennis who seems to understand more about the mayhem that ensues than anyone else does. Robin Williams will voice the character.

Die Ware lag versteckt in 14 ausgehöhlten Büchern: Bei den Vereinten Nationen in New York ist Kokain im Millionenwert aufgetaucht. Schmuggler hatten offenbar versucht, die Drogen per Diplomatenpost zu verschicken.

Cocaine Sacks Worth $2m Shipped To UN Headquarters By Accident
Two sacks of cocaine have been accidentally delivered to the United Nations’ New York headquarters.
The 16kg shipment from Mexico was hidden in hollowed-out books inside pouches which were stamped with forgeries of the organisation’s logo.
UN diplomatic pouches are not meant to be searched, but when sorters were unable to find an address on them, they simply forwarded them to the organisation’s headquarters.

Keine Dateneinsicht für Fluggastdaten
Der US-Bürgerrechtsaktivist und Reisejournalist Edward Hasbrouck versucht seit Jahren, Auskünfte über sein Bewegungsprofil zu erlangen. Einen vollständigen Datensatz hat er bisher nicht erhalten. Laut einer neuen Gerichtsentscheidung wird er diesen auch nie bekommen, denn die Fluggastdaten wurden im US-Datenschutzgesetz von der Dateneinsicht ausgenommen. Der Fall ist jedoch nicht nur für die USA relevant, sondern auch für Europa.

Wissenschaftliches Gutachten belegt: keine "Schutzlücke" ohne Vorratsdatenspeicherung
Dem Chaos Computer Club (CCC) wurde ein wissenschaftliches Gutachten der kriminologischen Abteilung des Max-Planck-Instituts (MPI) für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht zugespielt, das sich detailliert mit der Frage der angeblichen "Schutzlücke" durch den Wegfall der Vorratsdatenspeicherung nach dem Urteil des Bundesverfassungsgerichts vom 2. März 2010 beschäftigt. Die Studie kommt zum eindeutigen Ergebnis, daß eine solche immer wieder behauptete Lücke nicht besteht. Die angebliche Notwendigkeit der Speicherung von 300 bis 500 Millionen Datensätzen pro Tag kann laut der Untersuchung nicht durch kriminologische Statistiken belegt werden.
Der CCC publiziert das 271-seitige Dokument, um endlich eine faktenbezogene Diskussion um die angebliche Notwendigkeit der Vorratsdatenspeicherung zu ermöglichen. "Die umfangreiche europaweite Erhebung und Auswertung des MPI offenbart, daß die Stammtischparolen von der 'Schutzlücke' durch den Wegfall der anlaßlosen Telekommunikationsdatenspeicherung keine Faktenbasis haben", faßte CCC-Sprecher Frank Rieger die Ergebnisse der Studie zusammen.

European Parliament Member Marietje Schaake Explains How Europeans Can Stop ACTA
As we've been discussing, there's been a lot of misinformation flying around concerning ACTA -- especially in the EU, where it has not yet been officially voted on. While we've tried to explain some of the problems with the agreement, there is still plenty of confusion over what to do about it. Thankfully, Marietje Schaake, a Member of the European Parliament (whose excellent work we've discussed before) has taken to Reddit to provide a lot more detail about the process itself, and what people can do to speak up. It's very useful info, especially for those in Europe (while also being a nice display of how politicians can use Reddit for good purposes). Basically, while ACTA has been signed by many members of the EU, it still needs to be ratified by the European Parliament. That's why there's still some time and why you should pay attention to what Schaake has to say.

Legendärer Bukowski-Übersetzer Carl Weissner tot - Sein Herz gehörte der Underground-Literatur
Als vor zwei Jahren mit Manhattan Muffdiver erstmals von ihm auch ein Roman auf Deutsch erschien, im Wiener Milena Verlag, antwortete Carl Weissner auf die Frage, warum dieser Roman denn mit einem Bericht von der Beerdigung Charles Bukowskis ende: "Dass muss man nicht so verstehen, dass ich von Bukowski nicht loskomme, sondern es hat einen eher praktischen Grund: Ich brauchte noch zwanzig Seiten Text. Und diese Reportage (...) war der einzige deutsche Text, den ich in der Schublade hatte."
So viel Nonchalance und Pragmatismus in allen Ehren – doch natürlich konnte Carl Weissner von dem legendären, 1994 gestorbenen Gossen- und Saufpoeten Bukowski nicht einfach so loskommen. Er wollte das auch gar nicht. Weissner hatte diesen schließlich Mitte der sechziger Jahre selbst entdeckt, 1970 mit dem Band Aufzeichnungen eines Außenseiters erstmals übersetzt und dann derart verkauft und gefördert, dass Bukowski insbesondere in den Siebzigern und Achtzigern in Deutschland zu einem viel gelesenen Autor wurde. Fiel der Name Bukowski, wurde einen Atemzug später auch schon der Name von Weissner genannt.

MEP quits ACTA 'charade' in protest at EU signing
A French MEP has quit the process of scrutinising ACTA for the European Parliament, calling the treaty's passage through the EU legislative system a masquerade.
In a statement on Thursday, Kader Arif denounced the signing of ACTA (the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) by the EU and 22 member states earlier in the day. He said the European Parliament was being undermined and the process was a "charade" in which he would no longer participate.
“This agreement might have major consequences on citizens' lives, and still, everything is being done to prevent the European Parliament from having its say in this matter. That is why today, as I release this report for which I was in charge, I want to send a strong signal and alert the public opinion about this unacceptable situation. I will not take part in this mascarade.”

Kader Arif (Frankreich), Berichterstatter des Europäischen Parlaments zum Thema ACTA ist heute von dieser Funktion unter Protest zurückgetreten
EU-Parlamentarier aus Österreich äußerten sich in einer Umfrage von ORF.at ablehnend bis skeptisch. ACTA kann frühestens im Juni im Plenum angestimmt werden, wahrscheinlich wird es aber Herbst.
Während hochrangige europäische Diplomaten, auch aus Österreich, in Japan die Unterzeichnungszeremonien abolvierten, wurden in Polen neue Proteste angekündigt. Am Mittwoch waren Zehntausende in mehreren Städten Polens zum Protest gegen das umstrittene Antipiraterieabkommen ACTA auf den Straßen.
Der Sozialdemokratische MEP Kader Arif (Frankreich), Berichterstatter des Europäischen Parlaments zum Thema ACTA ist heute von dieser Funktion unter Protest zurückgetreten, berichtet das französische Magazin Numerama. Der erboste Arif bezeichnete den gesamten ACTA-Prozess als von Anfang an geschoben, "eine Maskerade", bei der er nicht weiter mitmachen wolle.
"Cet accord peut avoir des conséquences majeures sur la vie de nos concitoyens, et pourtant tout est fait pour que le Parlement européen n'ait pas voix au chapitre. Ainsi aujourd'hui, en remettant ce rapport dont j'avais la charge, je souhaite envoyer un signal fort et alerter l'opinion publique sur cette situation inacceptable. Je ne participerai pas à cette mascarade".

New drone has no pilot anywhere, so who's accountable?
The Navy is testing an autonomous plane that will land on an aircraft carrier. The prospect of heavily armed aircraft screaming through the skies without direct human control is unnerving to many.
The Navy's new drone being tested near Chesapeake Bay stretches the boundaries of technology: It's designed to land on the deck of an aircraft carrier, one of aviation's most difficult maneuvers.
What's even more remarkable is that it will do that not only without a pilot in the cockpit, but without a pilot at all.
The X-47B marks a paradigm shift in warfare, one that is likely to have far-reaching consequences. With the drone's ability to be flown autonomously by onboard computers, it could usher in an era when death and destruction can be dealt by machines operating semi-independently.

ACTA heißt ausgeschrieben „Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement”, was man auf Deutsch als Abkommen gegen Produktpiraterie übersetzen kann. Die EU hat ACTA mit zahlreichen Staaten wie den USA verhandelt. Momentan läuft die Ratifizierung sowohl auf europäischer als auch auf deutscher Ebene. ACTA ist ein Abkommen, das sowohl wegen seines intransparenten Aushandlungsprozesses, als auch wegen seines Inhalts in der Kritik steht. ACTA — das steht für Intransparenz, Strafverschärfungen bei Urheberrechtsverletzungen und Rechtsunsicherheit für die von Sanktionen Betroffenen. Außerdem ist der Zugang zu Medizin in Entwicklungsländern massiv gefährdet. Die Kritik an ACTA, hierzu vorliegende wissenschaftliche Studien sowie den aktuellen Stand des Ratifizierungsprozesses des Abkommens auf deutscher und europäischer Ebene diskutieren:
