Watch charming grannies smoke weed for first time in Amsterdam
In a new British TV show called A Granny's Guide to the Modern World (Channel 4), three adorable ladies ages 73, 78 and 82 try weed for the first time when they visit a coffee shop in Amsterdam. One of the weed-tenders helps them out, showing them how to use a bong, roll a joint (a job that is given to the nimble-fingered granny who is an expert embroiderer), and introduces them to one of Amsterdam's famous "space cakes."

Why Florida's Medical Marijuana System Is Ripe for Corporate Takeover
In June 2014, the disgraced former CEO of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) signed Florida’s medical marijuana bill into law. It was a fitting beginning to a regulatory process that has been marred by shadowy fraud in the selection of lucrative vertically integrated licenses in what could become one of the largest medical marijuana markets in the country. The state appears poised to double down upon the fraud, and in keeping with Governor Rick Scott’s legacy of putting healthcare profits before people, some of the new law’s provisions could shield corporate revenues at the expense of fragile patients. This is the picture painted by Freedom of Information Act requests, Sunshine Law requests and public reports pointing to perjury and fraud on the part of Alpha Foliage and its partner Surterra Therapeutics, one of only five nurseries granted oligopolic power over Florida’s entire medical cannabis market. The corruption may lead all the way to the governor’s office and it seems some of Florida’s powerful agricultural companies have wielded their influence over existing medical marijuana laws to add dangerous provisions in their financial favor.

Turkey and his recent coup. A short insight into 10GB of Twitter data: origin, fav. words, time series analysis.
The coup/attempt in Turkey kept me up from going to sleep after the two nice hours of “Back to the Future” on German television. So despite of the tragedy behind it: twitter was exploding as I watched the news coming in. I was interested in the timeline of tweets, locations and “everything”. I downloaded about 10Gb of twitter data and here is my analysis for everything ‘#turkey’ from Friday till Monday. When I first thought about it and trying to get tweets from the Twitter API I reached any limits quite soon. So how was it possible to get over 10GB of twitter data in just 8hrs?

Get Ready For A Truly Spectacular Meteor Shower
If you’ve been waiting for a perfect summer evening to watch a meteor shower, then good news. Overnight from August 11 to 12 (that’s Sunday night to Monday morning this upcoming week), one of this year’s most visually impressive meteor showers, the Perseid meteors, will light up the night sky. And this year in particular, scientists say the Perseid peak could display an “outburst” of up to 200 meteors per hour shouting across the U.S. sky.

Video explains Kubrick's use of innovative camera tech when shooting Barry Lyndon
Legendary director Stanley Kubrick was known to be obsessed with cameras and pushing the limits of cinematic technology, with much of his technical awareness stemming from his days as a stills photographer. A new video essay by the British Film Institute now explains his use of different lenses to create the movie Barry Lyndon, which won an Oscar for its cinematography.

The 28-Year-Old Activist Who Took on Facebook. And Won
A new U.S.-European Union data-privacy accord that took hold this week could have been a reason to celebrate for Max Schrems, the 28-year-old whose successful landmark lawsuit against Facebook last year led to the new rules affecting more than 4,000 companies. Instead, he's saying the new rules should be thrown out as well. Schrems says the new framework is muddled, allowing mass amounts of data collected by American technology companies to continue making its way to U.S. national security agencies. He expects the new policy to be struck down again by courts, leaving global companies further in limbo. “Privacy Shield is the product of pressure by the U.S. and the IT industry – not of rational or reasonable considerations," Schrems said in a statement after the rules, which began Aug. 1, were passed by European lawmakers last month. "It is very likely to fail again."

Drone hacking is becoming Child’s Play
You know what really strikes me about a lot of the drone hacks we’ve seen lately? It just get too easy. I mean we’re seeing a huge number of new attacks published at every security conference. Last RSA Conference a security researcher reported finding a way to hijack a high-end drone, using parts costing as little as $40. The expert says it is possible to start the octocopter’s engines, engage auto-takeoff, control its camera and, potentially, crash the machine. The high end drone manufacturer or model was not disclosed, but it cost about $18000 and is in use by police departments all around the world.

Reverse Engineering a Bluetooth Lightbulb
Lately, I find myself giving lots of talks about The Physical Web and Web Bluetooth. To help demonstrate some of the capabilities of these technologies, I wanted to find an affordable device for my demos — preferably under $10 — so my audience can easily get the demo equipment and try it themselves.
