ACTA: EU-Parlament stellt sich Kritik
Fast vier Stunden lang diskutierten Kommissionsvertreter und Parlamentarier heute Nachmittag mit internationalen Rechtsprofessoren und einer Hundertschaft von ACTA-Kritikern.
"Auf den Stufen sitzen ist aus feuerpolizeilichen Gründen leider nicht erlaubt" - so eröffnete der Vorsitzende des parlamentarischen Handelsausschusses (INTA), Vital Moreira, den Workshop über das umstrittene ACTA-Abkommen. 20 Minuten vor Beginn war die öffentliche Veranstaltung im Europaparlament bereits ausgebucht, die vielen anderen Interessierten aus der Zivilgesellschaft wurden in einen Raum mit Live-Übertragung geleitet.

Suchergebnisse von Anti-SOPA-Blogs von Rechteindustrie zensiert
Am vergangenen Wochenende wurden zwei SOPA- und PIPA-kritische Blogbeiträge von Techdirt und Torrentfreak aus den Google-Suchergebnissen ausgeschlossen. Die Sperrung erfolgte aufgrund eines (falschen) Hinweises des US-Contentverwerters Armovore.
Durch die im “Digital Millennium Copyright Act” (DMCA) vorgeschriebene “Notice and Takedown”-Politik müssen in den Vereinigten Staaten Webseiten mit urheberrechtsverletzenden Inhalten von Suchmaschinenanbietern ohne weitere Überprüfung gesperrt werden. Die Inhaber der Seiten werden über die Streichung aus den Suchergebnissen nicht unterrichtet.

'We, The Web Kids': Manifesto For An Anti-ACTA Generation
One of the striking features of the demonstrations against ACTA that took place across Europe over the last few weeks was the youth of the participants. That's not to say that only young people are concerned about ACTA, but it's an indication that they take its assault on the Internet very personally -- unlike, perhaps, older and more dispassionate critics.
As sometimes happens, a text has been floating around that captures rather well the spirit of that generation. It was originally written in Polish, and released under a liberal cc-by license; there are now a number of translations. As its author, Piotr Czerski, wrote in an email to Techdirt, its origins were quite humble:
I was asked by the journalist from local newspaper to write a text explaining difference between "analog" and "digital" generations. I thought that I should write something more: text, which can offer some kind of self-identity for all this different people protesting against ACTA. So I used the poetics of manifesto.

UK Trying To Censor Parody Video About The 2012 Olympics - Stop copyright being used to censor jokes
We've discussed for many years how the Olympics has a ridiculously overaggressive approach to attacking free speech for those who criticize or mention aspects of the Olympics without permission. In most locations that host the Olympics, special extraordinary laws get passed against specific expressions around the Olympics that go beyond ordinary restrictions on speech. London, it seems, has been particularly willing to bend over backwards to appease the International Olympic Committee.

ACTA-Farce im EU-Parlament
"Unsere Verantwortung als Politiker ist, Tatsachen zu schaffen und nicht der Masse folgen" sagte EU-Kommissar Karel de Gucht zu den Protesten. Weitere, geheimgehaltene ACTA-Dokumente sind aufgetaucht.
Die mit einiger Spannung erwartete öffentliche Sitzung des Handelsauschusses (INTA) zum Thema ACTA verlief am Mittwoch Nachmittag so, wie bisher stets mit dem umstrittenen Abkommen umgegangen wurde.

Pressemitteilung der Europäischen Koalition für eine gerechte und wirksame Drogenpolitik
Vom 9. bis zum 16. März 2012 wird das Drogen Frieden Festival während des Jahrestreffens der Betäubungsmittelkommission der Vereinten Nationen im Vienna International Center der Vereinten Nationen stattfinden.
Das Festival ist ein spontaner Treffen der Menschen, die mit Millionen anderer Menschen auf der Welt eine tiefgehende Veränderung der Drogenpolitik fordern. Diese Politik sollte nicht auf Verbote, sondern auf öffentliche Gesundheit, Schadenbegrenzung, der Analyse von Kosten und Ergebnisse sowie dem Respekt der Menschenrechten beruhen.

Diese Länder waren schon mal pleite
Seit dem Jahr 1800 gab es weltweit 227 Staatsinsolvenzen. Der Pleiten-Überblick zeigt: Der Fall Griechenland ist historisch einzigartig. Kaum ein entwickeltes Land hat sich je ohne Not derart in die Schuldenfalle manövriert.
Es gibt nichts zu beschönigen: Der bevorstehende Schuldenschnitt für Griechenland ist nichts anderes als eine Staatspleite - und zwar eine gewaltige. Auf einen großen Teil des ihnen zustehenden Geldes werden die privaten Gläubiger freiwillig verzichten müssen, etwas anderes bleibt ihnen ohnehin nicht übrig. Die Rating-Agentur Standard & Poor's zog am Montag die Konsequenzen und stufte die Bonität Griechenlands auf das Niveau eines "teilweisen Zahlungsausfalls" ab. Bedienen kann Griechenland seine Schulden aus eigener Kraft ohnehin schon lange nicht mehr, das Land hängt am Tropf der internationalen Geldgeber.

Kim Dotcom Remains Free on Bail As U.S. Appeal Fails
Kim Dotcom remains free on bail after United States authorities lost an appeal of an earlier decision by a New Zealand court to grant him bail. Justice Brewer dismissed the appeal, which was put forward by New Zealand Crown lawyers on behalf of the U.S. government, in the Auckland High Court late Wednesday afternoon, local time.
Dotcom, the outsized founder of Megaupload and associated file locker sites, is accused of masterminding a business that made more than $100 million by charging users to watch and download copyrighted material. Megaupload’s lawyers say the site complied with U.S. copyright laws, despite being based in Hong Kong, and that like any other internet company it is not responsible for policing its own site for copyright violations.

The Air Force’s F-35A Joint Strike Fighter is finally cleared to begin introductory flights at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida — four months late.
The belated “Military Flight Release” is a big step forward for the stealthy JSF, which is slated to replace almost all of the Pentagon’s tactical jets over the next 30 years but has been plagued by design problems, safety concerns, delays and cost increases.

USA wollen Mitspracherecht bei EU-Datenschutz
Bei den Beratungen über eine Neufassung des europäischen Datenschutzrechts machen die USA ein Mitspracherecht geltend. Im Anschluss an Gespräche mit der EU-Kommission in Brüssel sagte der Chefjurist im US-Wirtschaftsministerium, Cameron F. Kerry, am Mittwoch in Berlin, seine Regierung betrachte sich in diesem Prozess als berechtigten Interessenvertreter.
„So wie unsere internationalen Partner und die internationale Gemeinschaft Stakeholder in unserem Prozess sind, so glaube ich, dass wir Stakeholder im europäischen Prozess sind“, sagte Kerry vor Journalisten. Die im Januar als Entwurf vorgestellte neue Datenschutzverordnung der EU sieht vor, dass europäisches Recht auch dann greift, wenn Anbieter keinen Sitz in der EU haben, sich aber an Kunden in Europa wenden.

EU Parliament Urged To Reject Agreement With The US To Hand Over Passenger Data - Sophie in 't Veld
There's been an ongoing discussion between the US and Europe (and other countries as well) about the US's demands that anyone flying to the US should have all sorts of data passed along to the US first. And while an agreement has been made, apparently the rapporteur in charge of examining this issue of sending passenger data to the US, Sophie in't Veld, is now urging the EU to reject the agreement.

Hidden camera footage of police officers hindering citizens who try to file complaints
This video is a montage of hidden camera footage of police officers across America -- in unspecified jurisdictions -- intimidating or otherwise hindering someone who has asked for a complaint form. They ask for ID, they demand details, they make veiled threats, they make explicit threats. This is exactly what happened to me the two times I tried to file a complaint for police misconduct (once in Toronto, once in San Francisco).
