The James Randi Educational Foundation Gives Teachers a Hand

New York City was recently the host to the North East Conference on Science and Skepticism, or NECSS which is pronounced “nexus.” NECSS ran over three days and included some great events outside of the conference in different venues in NYC. Saturday April 20th was a full day of panels and presentation, including a live taping of “The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe” with special guest James “The Amazing” Randi. NECSS was a great event for anyone who enjoys science and critical thinking.

One panel in particular that was of interest to me was Critical Thinking Education. On the panel were DJ Grothe, president of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), Dr. Meghan Groome from the New York Academy of Science and Marc Barnhill, who teaches critical thinking at New York University. All three panelists have been involved in teaching critical thinking either in traditional classroom settings or as part of workshops for adults and educators.

Euro declines on French and Greek election results

The euro fell against the dollar and the pound on Monday following weekend election results.

Poor performances by pro-bailout parties in Greece and the victory of Francois Hollande in France, who wants to focus more on growth, have cast doubt on European austerity plans.

The euro fell as low as $1.295, its lowest since January, and dropped to three-year lows against the pound.

Annotated Bibliography of Timothy Leary on the Open Library

In April 1995, I moderated a panel at an event called the Whole Life Expo in San Fransisco, California called “The Future of Consciousness.” Among the panel members was Timothy Leary.

There was quite a bit of attention on Dr. Leary that afternoon. Earlier in the day, at his own workshop at the annual expo, Leary had announced to the world that he had untreatable, and most likely terminal Prostate Cancer.

Army trying to figure out what to do with 20,000 mine-resistant trucks

The venerable HMMWV served the United States military as the go-to vehicle for 25 solid years. Before that, various militarized Jeep models had been pressed into service since 1941, when the army first identified the need for a lightweight, all-terrain vehicle capable of carrying a few troops and all their gear into battle.

It seems the so-called Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAPS for short) aren't going to have the same kind of life expectancy as their predecessors. According to CNN, the military is finding it difficult to cook up uses for the 20,000 MRAPS it possesses that are no longer needed for the war in Iraq, where the threat of improvised explosive devises necessitated gigantic V-shaped hulls and several tons of armor.

R.I.P. Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys are one of the most important and influential hip-hop groups of all time. They were instrumental in making hip-hop a global, mainstream force. Formed in 1981 as a hardcore band, they combined punk and rap into a singular sound that grew increasingly broad over the years, encompassing a vast array of genres. Yauch, Michael Diamond (Mike D), and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) released several classic albums, including their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986, 1989's Paul's Boutique, and 1994's Ill Communication.

Feds Seized Hip-Hop Site for a Year, Waiting for Proof of Infringement

Federal authorities who seized a popular hip-hop music site based on assertions from the Recording Industry Association of America that it was linking to four “pre-release” music tracks gave it back more than a year later without filing civil or criminal charges because of apparent recording industry delays in confirming infringement, according to court records obtained by Wired.

The Los Angeles federal court records, which were unsealed Wednesday at the joint request of Wired, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the First Amendment Coalition, highlight a secret government process in which a judge granted the government repeated time extensions to build a civil or criminal case against Dajaz1.com, one of about 750 domains the government has seized in the last two years in a program known as Operation in Our Sites.

Kickstriker is a funding platform for activists and engineers working to resolve global conflicts

Kickstriker is a fundraising platform for activists, engineers and others working to resolve global conflicts. We believe that crowdfunding holds the potential to address many conflicts around the globe by allowing those who care to directly support potential solutions. These solutions might take the form of military action, supplying equipment and arms to those in need or the development of new military technologies with immediate applications in the field. Rather than waiting for national governments, coalitions and international bodies like the UN, NATO, EU and AU to decide to address a conflict--a process that can take years of deliberation--Kickstriker users are funding solutions that can be on the ground in weeks.

Kickstriker was built by three graduate students in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU: Josh Begley, Mehan Jayasuriya and James Borda. Following the massive success of Invisible Children's "Kony 2012" campaign, we found ourselves excited about the potential that crowdsourcing held for addressing global conflicts.

Raspberry Pi Review & Initial How-To Setup Guide

Six years ago, Raspberry Pi founder Eben Upton set out to reignite programming in schools with a cheap, compact computing platform. Despite targeting students, his foundation's $35 computer captured the imaginations of tinkers worldwide, resulting in overwhelming demand. Interest was so high, that distributors Premier Farnell and RS buckled under the strain of preorders in February. The former outfit later said demand was 20 times greater than its supply, with orders hitting 700 a second at one point.

When the first 10,000 devices shipped in mid-April, the organization graciously sent us a sample for coverage. Along with a hands-on review of the Pi, today we'll be covering basic steps for setting up the computer and other elemental post-installation tasks to get you up and running with applications. In other words, this should serve as a starting point no matter what you want to do with your Raspberry Pi.
