200 Turkish journalists blacklisted from parliament
One of the most vital duties of a journalist — in any democracy — is to report on the day-to-day operations of a country’s parliament. Journalism schools devote much time to teaching the deciphering budgets and legal language, and how to report fairly on political divides and debates. I recalled these studies when I read an email Wednesday morning from an Ankara-based colleague. I smiled bitterly. The message included a link to an article published in the Gazete Duvar, which informed that 200 journalists had been barred from entering the home of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Security controls at the two entrances of the failed-coup-damaged building had been intensified and journalists were checked against a list as they tried to enter. The reason for the bans? Most of those who were blocked worked for shuttered or seized outlets alleged to be affiliated with the Gülenist movement.

Artists Build Heavenly Homemade Island Off Vancouver Coast
Off the coast of Vancouver Island floats a dreamy home built by Canadian artists Catherine King and Wayne Adams that boasts greenhouses, indoor fishing holes, and a dance floor. Nicknamed “Freedom Cove,” the self-sufficient space is a 45-minute boat ride from town and only accessible via water. Rather than being anchored, the homeowners decided to tether the manmade island to shore with ropes, making for a more buoyant, flexible structure.

Trump allies, WikiLeaks and Russia are pushing a nonsensical conspiracy theory about the DNC hacks
Trump campaign surrogates are fueling a conspiracy theory that a murdered Democratic National Committee staffer was connected to the hacking of the DNC, a theory being pushed by WikiLeaks and the Russian state-controlled press. There’s a big problem, however, with the theory: it doesn’t make any sense when compared to all the available evidence. Trump allies, Assange, and the Russian government are somewhat unlikely cohorts but they all have two things in common – hatred of Hillary Clinton and an interest in diverting suspicion away from the real culprits in the DNC hack, Russian intelligence services seeking to interfere in the U.S. election to Trump’s benefit.

Everything you need to know about Werner Herzog
As the cult filmmaker’s latest deep-dive documentary hits theatres, we look back on a lifetime spent embracing madness, exploring the human soul and extolling the virtues of the natural world with his signature Teutonic sobriety
Considering everything 73-year-old Werner Herzog has put himself (and others) through over the last five decades, calling this eccentric storyteller a soldier of cinema feels about right. Among the most unhinged expressions of his creative genius: hauling a steamship over a mountain in the middle of the Peruvian jungle, hypnotizing an entire cast of actors, eating a shoe publicly for his filmmaker friend Errol Morris and exposing his crew to an impending volcanic eruption. But for Herzog, who’s literally been shot at during a BBC interview and who ignored The Simpsons when asked to voice a character during the show’s 22nd season, that’s really just scratching the surface. Once called the “most important director alive” by Nouvelle Vague great François Truffaut, the prolific Bavarian has made it his life’s mission to stare danger in the face and look deep into the abyss of mankind – courageously, merrily, always obsessively. Remind him he’s the only filmmaker to have shot on all seven continents and he’ll cringe at the prospect of being immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records. As the intense, unruly and ridiculously funny German cineaste releases Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World, a timely inquiry into our digital dependency, we look back on some of the cult artist’s most delirious, dramatic and downright dazzling career highlights.

F-22 Raptor grounded by 20,000 bees
The US Air Force's F-22 Raptor may be the most advanced fighter jet in the world but even with $143 million-worth of stealth and supersonic capabilities, it proved to be no match for one unlikely adversary --- a huge swarm of honey bees. An F-22 aircraft from the 192nd Air Wing was temporarily grounded on June 11 after crew members at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia discovered nearly 20,000 bees hanging from the jet's exhaust nozzle following flight operations.

Venus May Once Have Been a Garden Planet
A new model suggests a world very different from the one we know today
One of the hard facts of our solar system is that even with eight perfectly nice planets, Earth remains the only house on the block with its lights on—at least in terms of life. Mars, it’s increasingly clear, was once a warm, watery planet and had a shot at cooking up biology, but only until numerous environmental cataclysms turned it dry and cold. Now, according to environmental models run by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and reported in Geophysical Research Letters, Venus coulda’ been a contender too. For up to two billion years, the investigators believe, our cosmic neighbor may have been an entirely hospitable place for life.

Aston Martin’s $2.5 Million Hypercar Will Be Faster Than a Formula One Race Car
Aston Martin is bringing the adrenaline of Formula One racing to its latest luxury model. Teaming up with its racing partner Red Bull, the two companies are looking to beat out the Bugatti Chiron for the fastest street-legal production car. The AM-RB 001, as Aston Martin is calling the concept for now, would be Red Bull’s first foray into the auto market, joint or otherwise.
