Polizei sucht verlorene Maschinenpistole
Ein Polizist hat in Leipzig im Einsatz seine Maschinenpistole verloren. Am Freitag sei mit Hochdruck nach der Waffe gesucht worden - zunächst jedoch erfolglos, wie Polizeisprecher Uwe Voigt sagte. Der Beamte sei am Donnerstagabend zu einem Einsatz wegen eines vermeintlichen Raubes an einer Tankstelle im Plattenbauviertel Grünau gerufen worden. Nach dessen Ende habe er ordnungsgemäß seine Ausrüstungsgegenstände überprüft - und dabei das Fehlen der Maschinenpistole festgestellt. Es handelt sich um eine Waffe des Typs Heckler & Koch MP5.

F-22 Raptor grounded by 20,000 bees
The US Air Force's F-22 Raptor may be the most advanced fighter jet in the world but even with $143 million-worth of stealth and supersonic capabilities, it proved to be no match for one unlikely adversary --- a huge swarm of honey bees. An F-22 aircraft from the 192nd Air Wing was temporarily grounded on June 11 after crew members at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia discovered nearly 20,000 bees hanging from the jet's exhaust nozzle following flight operations.

A new model suggests a world very different from the one we know today
One of the hard facts of our solar system is that even with eight perfectly nice planets, Earth remains the only house on the block with its lights on—at least in terms of life. Mars, it’s increasingly clear, was once a warm, watery planet and had a shot at cooking up biology, but only until numerous environmental cataclysms turned it dry and cold. Now, according to environmental models run by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and reported in Geophysical Research Letters, Venus coulda’ been a contender too. For up to two billion years, the investigators believe, our cosmic neighbor may have been an entirely hospitable place for life.

Aston Martin is bringing the adrenaline of Formula One racing to its latest luxury model. Teaming up with its racing partner Red Bull, the two companies are looking to beat out the Bugatti Chiron for the fastest street-legal production car. The AM-RB 001, as Aston Martin is calling the concept for now, would be Red Bull’s first foray into the auto market, joint or otherwise.

LHC-style supercolliders are entering a make or break phase
As the Large Hadron Collider's first sign of a superparticle melts away, physicists must contemplate their nightmare scenario.
Particle physics finds itself in testing times. This branch of science aims to describe the universe by pulling it apart into its most fundamental building blocks, or particles, and putting them back together in a way that explains how everything works. Its most robust attempt to do this, the standard model, explains the subatomic world to incredible precision – but it falls short in some big ways, lacking the parts to explain gravity and the mysterious realms of dark matter and dark energy. Theories such as supersymmetry, and on extra dimensions and new forces of nature, seek to provide the missing pieces. Almost all of these predict new particles that mighty accelerator the Large Hadron Collider at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, is powerful enough to discover. The anticipation of finding such a particle probably explains what happened when a small bump showed up in LHC data at the end of 2015. This could have been the first sign of a particle 800 times heavier than a proton that could fit the predictions of supersymmetry. A flood of more than 500 theory papers followed in an attempt to explain it. But after adding the data taken at the LHC so far in 2016, the bump went away. The 2015 signal was just noise after all.

Ich habe heute gelernt, dass es einen Youtube-Kanal namens „Hikea Productions“ gibt, auf dem Videos veröffentlicht werden, in denen Menschen Ikea-Möbel zusammenbauen (naja, oder zusammenzubauen versuchen), die sich davor Drogen reingepfiffen haben.

Then this happened: Portable toilet discovered full of pot in Rogue River park. (Die Pflanzen sind offensichtlich männliche Cannabis-Pflanzen mit sehr viel weniger THC, da hat wohl jemand seinen unbrauchbaren Ganja im Klo entsorgt.)

Uh oh, there is terrible news to report about the 18-year-old daughter of the president of the United States. Did you hear Malia Obama, upon graduating from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, is taking a GAP YEAR? I know right, how lucky is she, we are so jealous, ugh, we wish OUR DAD was president of America! Just kidding, that was not the bad news, the REAL bad news is that Malia, the 18-year-old who is 18, went to Lollapalooza, and instead of gently swaying side to side and enjoying the musical stylings of the gathered troubadours, she put a reefer in her mouth, lit it on fire, and swallowed it.

Definitive guide to marijuana on the 2016 ballot: Recreational & medical initiatives
Legal cannabis has been a hot topic in the march to Election Night 2016.
Dozens of petitions have circulated across the United States. Some have successfully cleared the necessary regulatory hurdles to secure a spot at the ballot box. Others have fallen short.
Come November, voters in at least nine states will decide on whether to legalize either the recreational use or the medical use of marijuana. As it stands now, those states include: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada and North Dakota.
More states could join that list in the coming months. Several proposals — including an unprecedented one that could strip a state of its medical marijuana program — remain in the wings, awaiting official confirmation.

DEA ends its monopoly on marijuana growing for medical research
The federal government is ending its decades-old monopoly on marijuana production for medical research as the Drug Enforcement Administration announced Thursday that it was bowing to changing times. The agency said it would begin allowing researchers and drug companies to use pot grown in places other than its well-secured facility at the University of Mississippi. But the agency did not make the bigger plunge toward marijuana legalization that many lawmakers have been advocating. It passed on a proposal to remove cannabis from the federal government’s most dangerous category of narcotics. The drug continues to be classified as more dangerous than cocaine.
