The Shady Past of the Vatican Bank
Whereas Benedict XVI and his predecessors have preached humility and ethical financial dealings from the window overlooking St. Peter's Square, his confidants working directly beneath the papal windows have continued to pursue shady financial transactions.
The Vatican has yet to divulge the business practices its bank has been using for decades. "There is fear that, owing to the transparency necessary today, one will find something in the past that one doesn't want to," says Marco Politi, a Rome-based Vatican expert.

Monsanto Kicks Off Campaign To Prevent Genetically Modified Food Labeling
The Monsanto-funded StopCostlyFoodLabeling.com (featuring articles such as “How California’s GMO Labeling Law Could Limit Your Food Choices and Hurt the Poor”) provides a sample of what will be rolled out as Californians mull a referendum requiring the labeling of GMO foods. Via BlackListed News:
In February, Vermont contemplated the Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act. The proposed bill prohibits GMO food producers from using keywords like “natural,” “naturally made,” “naturally grown,” and “all natural” to describe GMO ingredients and products. The National Conference of State Legislatures reported that nearly 20 states were considering similar programs. Public surveys show a whopping 90 percent of the U.S. in favor of such practices.</p>

Landgericht Berlin verbietet Graffiti-Doku “UNLIKE U”
Das Landgericht hat bereits vor einigen Wochen die Graffiti-Doku “UNLIKE U” verboten. Und zwar, weil die Macher sich keine Drehgenehmigung für das Filmen von U-Bahnhöfen und Betriebsgeländen der BVG erteilen liesen. Verrückte Welt.

"Part of the Game"-Affäre: Sieben Monate bedingt für Scheuch
Der Kärntner FPK-Chef Uwe Scheuch ist am Freitag vom Landesgericht Klagenfurt in der „Part of the Game“-Affäre schuldig gesprochen worden. Er wurde zu sieben Monaten Haft bedingt und einer Geldstrafe verurteilt. Scheuch kündigte Berufung gegen das nicht rechtskräftige Urteil an. Der Prozess musste wegen eines Formalfehlers wiederholt werden. In der „Part of the Game“-Affäre wurde Scheuch Geschenkannahme vorgeworfen. Von einem potenziellen russischen Investor hatte er eine Parteispende im Austausch gegen eine Staatsbürgerschaft gefordert.

Syrien: WikiLeaks veröffentlicht 2 Mio. Mails
Die aus dem Zeitraum von August 2006 bis März 2012 stammenden Mails von syrischen Politikern, Ministerien und Firmen sind laut Wikileaks-Gründer Assange "für das syrische Regime als auch für dessen Gegner peinlich".
In einer zuvor ausgeschickten Mitteilung – eine Pressekonferenz hätte per Livestream übertragen werden sollen, der WikiLeaks-Server war allerdings zu diesem Zeitpunkt offenbar aus Überlastung down – meldete sich auch Julian Assange zu Wort. Die "außergewöhnliche Datensammlung" stamme von 680 syrischen Institutionen und Domains – darunter die Ministerien für Präsidentschafts-Angelegenheiten, Äußeres, Finanzen, Information, Transport und Kultur. Binnen der kommenden zwei Monate werden die Daten ausgewertet und via WikiLeaks und über diverse Medien – wie etwa die ARD in Deutschland – publiziert.

US Gov't And Hollywood Have Turned Kim Dotcom Into A Beloved Cult Hero
Kim Dotcom is not a sympathetic individual. Anyone who's followed his career over the years (even from well before Megaupload) has known that. He's loud, obnoxious, ostentatious and seems to have little shame about his past efforts to be on the wrong side of the law. If there's anyone out there who could easily be framed as "Dr. Evil," it is Dotcom. So, it's really quite stunning to realize that the US government and Hollywood have taken perhaps the easiest person to demonize around... and turned him into a lovable "cult hero."

Brutal Police Raid On California Marijuana Shop Caught On Video
A raid on a marijuana dispensary in Long Beach was caught on video showing officers smashing surveillance cameras and stepping on a suspect, moves that prompted accusations against the officers of excessive force.
More than a dozen police raided THC Downtown Collective in the 300 block of Atlantic Boulevard (map) on June 19, officials said. The video was posted to YouTube by user "Long Beach Raids" on July 1. Officials said they learned about the video on July 3./p>

Schützt unsere Kinder vor sexueller Gewalt: Petition gegen Verjährungsfrist
Kinder vor Sexualstraftaten schützen: Unsere Kinder müssen dauerhaft vor Sexualstraftätern geschützt werden, aber viele Opfer sexualisierter Gewalt können teilweise erst nach Jahren oder Jahrzehnten über diese Taten sprechen.
Nach dem geltenden Gesetz verjähren aber Sexualstraftaten und somit ist eine Anzeige der Täter jedoch nicht mehr möglich und Kinderschänder und andere Sexualstraftäter indirekt sogar durch den Gesetzgeber geschützt!
Ziel der aktuellen Petition von netzwerkB bei Avaaz.org ist es, in Deutschland endlich die Verjährungsfristen für Sexualstraftaten im Zivil- und Strafrecht aufzuheben und somit einen Teil dazu beizutragen, unsere Kinder wirkungsvoller vor Sexualstraftätern zu schützen.

Germans tell government they want dope legalized, bestiality banned
German Chancellor Angela Merkel may spend much of her time trying to solve the euro zone crisis, but drug use, protection of animals and interpretations of history are more pressing issues for some of her compatriots.
More than 152,000 Germans have voted to make cannabis a legal drug in an online poll conducted as part of Merkel’s strategy to bring the German government closer to the people.
Outlawing sex with animals also proved to be an important issue, with more than 93,000 voting to scrap a 1969 law which decriminalized the sexual abuse of animals.
