Im Mai 2013 ist es passiert. Da erblickte Edward Snowden das Licht der Öffentlichkeit und veränderte die Welt. Durch seine Enthüllungen über die weltweiten Spionagetätigkeiten des US-Geheimdienstes NSA ist nun klar, dass man Verschwörungstheoretiker manchmal durchaus ernst nehmen kann. Dass elektronische Kommunikation nicht immer privat stattfindet. Dass Big Brother schlicht und einfach Realität geworden ist.

Drone-Mounted Laser Weapons Are On the Way
DARPA is funding research into drone-mounted laser weapons. The project, called Endurance, is referred to in DARPA's 2014 budget request as being tasked with the development of 'technology for pod-mounted lasers to protect a variety of airborne platforms from emerging and legacy EO/IR guided surface-to-air missiles.' The budget explains that it will be the first application of DARPA's much-discussed Excalibur laser defense system, which developed lasers powerful enough to use as weapons.

Unfall mit WCs führt zu Megastau
Kilometerlange Staus hat es am Freitag im Raum St. Pölten gegeben. Grund waren tonnenweise Toilettenschüsseln, die nach einem Lkw-Unfall auf der Westautobahn (A1) lagen. Die Bergung dauerte mehrere Stunden.

UC Davis pepper-spray officer awarded $38,000
A former UC Davis police officer whose pepper-spraying of protesters gained worldwide notice thanks to a viral video has been awarded more than $38,000 in workers' compensation from the university for suffering he experienced after the incident.
Former police Lt. John Pike, who gained a degree of infamy for his role in the incident, was awarded the settlement Oct. 16 by the state Division of Workers' Compensation Appeals Board. The claim "resolves all claims of psychiatric injury specific or due to continuous trauma from applicant's employment at UC Davis."

Angela Merkel's call to Obama: are you bugging my mobile phone?
The furore over the scale of American mass surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden shifted to an incendiary new level on Wednesday evening when Angela Merkel of Germany called Barack Obama to demand explanations over reports that the US National Security Agency was monitoring her mobile phone.
Merkel was said by informed sources in Germany to be "livid" over the reports and convinced, on the basis of a German intelligence investigation, that the reports were utterly substantiated.

Gallup poll: 58% of Americans support legal weed
For marijuana advocates, the last 12 months have been a period of unprecedented success as Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize recreational use of marijuana. And now for the first time, a clear majority of Americans (58%) say the drug should be legalized. This is in sharp contrast to the time Gallup first asked the question in 1969, when only 12% favored legalization.

Top Silk Road Drug Dealer Was Flipped By Feds
One of the top narcotics dealers on Silk Road, the recently shuttered online drug bazaar, secretly began cooperating with federal agents after his Seattle-area home was raided in late-July, The Smoking Gun has learned.
The disclosure that Steven Sadler, known online as “Nod,” was flipped will likely cause significant distress for his large Silk Road customer base, which included retail and wholesale buyers of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Additionally, suppliers for Sadler, 40, will likely also be concerned that they have been exposed to law enforcement scrutiny.
