A conversation with Terry Pratchett, author of The Carpet People
Deep among the Carpet fronds, where the wild snargs prowl, the Munrung tribe has known peace for decades. But now the old order is unraveling, and a new story is in the making. A story of Fray, sweeping a trail of destruction; of villainous mouls, hungry for power; and of two noble brothers on the adventure of a lifetime.
It’s a story that will come to a terrible end—if someone doesn’t do something about it. If everyone doesn’t do something about it .

It's outrageous to accuse the Guardian of aiding terrorism by publishing Snowden's revelations
The Guardian's editor, Alan Rusbridger, is due to appear before the House of Commons home affairs select committee on Tuesday to answer questions about his newspaper's publication of intelligence files leaked by Edward Snowden. Unlike the directors of MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, who gave evidence recently before the intelligence and security committee, Rusbridger will not be provided with a list of questions in advance.

Edward Snowden revelations prompt UN investigation into surveillance
The UN's senior counter-terrorism official is to launch an investigation into the surveillance powers of American and British intelligence agencies following Edward Snowden's revelations that they are using secret programmes to store and analyse billions of emails, phone calls and text messages.
The UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson QC said his inquiry would also seek to establish whether the British parliament had been misled about the capabilities of Britain's eavesdropping headquarters, GCHQ, and whether the current system of oversight and scrutiny was strong enough to meet United Nations standards.

Explain Shell breaks down Linux command line arguments for you
While it is possible to use modern Linux distributions without touching the command line at all, or only on rare occasions, you will usually quickly come into contact with command line arguments when you want to make a change to the operating system and need to research how it is done on the Internet.
You can run these commands right away, but if you do not really know what they will do, it is usually not a good idea to do so.

Stuxnet 2 in the works, claims Iranian news agency
Hold the front page: Saudi Arabian and Israeli spy agencies are developing a worm more powerful than Stuxnet to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program again, after meeting in Vienna last week.
Sound a little far-fetched? Well, stranger things have happened but this particular yarn comes from Iran’s FARS news agency, thought to have strong ties to the country’s Revolutionary Guard, so a healthy dose of scepticism is probably advised.

The OPCW is now claiming they have a “technically feasible” plan to dump chemical weapons into the Mediterranean Sea
In what can only be described as a really bad idea, the organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is planning to destroy at least 1000 tones of the confiscated Syrian chemical weapon stockpile out at sea, which some fear will destroy delicate eco systems vital to sea and human life alike.
The OPCW claims the plan is “technically feasible” and is apparently willing to risk ecological disaster to destroy the toxic contents of the weaponry in or above the sea. Members of the press were told, the “group is considering whether to destroy the chemical weapons in the ocean, either on a ship or by loading them onto an offshore rig”, reported, RT. If the operation is approved for a green light, the Mediterranean Sea appears as if it will be the drop point. The MV Cape Ray would be conducting the transport, according to reports.

The Quietest Place On Earth Will Cause You To Hallucinate In 45 Minutes
Industry Tap reports that there is a place so quiet you can hear your heart beat, your lungs breathe and your stomach digest. It's the anechoic chamber at Orfield Labs in Minnesota where 3ft of sound-proofing fiberglass wedges and insulated steel and concrete absorbs 99.99% of sound, making it the quietest place in the world. 'When it's quiet, ears will adapt,' says the company's founder and president, Steven Orfield. 'The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You'll hear your heart beating, sometimes you can hear your lungs, hear your stomach gurgling loudly. In the anechoic chamber, you become the sound.' The chamber is used by a multitude of manufacturers, to test how loud their products are and the space normally rents for $300 to $400 an hour

Dark marketplace closes after theft of £3m in bitcoins
Dark net market Sheep Marketplace has shut down after $5.3m (£3.3m) in bitcoins was stolen from the site.
The site shut down over the weekend and visitors today see a notice blaming the theft for the closure.
It said the theft was carried out by a vendor on Sheep who exploited a bug in the site's software to steal the virtual cash.
Sheep Marketplace rose to prominence after the FBI shut down the illegal Silk Road marketplace in October.

Leaked paper reveals UN split over war on drugs
Major international divisions over the global "war on drugs" have been revealed in a leaked draft of a UN document setting out the organisation's long-term strategy for combating illicit narcotics.
The draft, written in September and seen by the Observer, shows there are serious and entrenched divisions over the longstanding US-led policy promoting prohibition as an exclusive solution to the problem.
Instead, a number of countries are pushing for the "war on drugs" to be seen in a different light, which places greater emphasis on treating drug consumption as a public health problem, rather than a criminal justice matter.
