New privacy laws could boost EU cloud industry

The proposed legislation could make organisations more wary about where their data is held

The European Union's data protection proposals, announced earlier this week, could unsettle end users looking at cloud adoption, but European cloud providers stand to benefit, according to Andy Burton, chairman of the Cloud Industry Forum (CIF).

Speaking to Techworld at Cloud Expo Europe in London yesterday, Burton said that, while there is a risk that sovereign law could come into conflict with the new EU legislation around data protection, that risk has been greatly over-exaggerated.

DARPA-Funded Hacker's Tiny $50 Spy Computer Hides In Offices, Drops From Drones

Even more embarrassing than a student discovering your GPS tracking device on his car, as the FBI found out last year, is having to ask him to give the expensive piece of equipment back.

So security researcher Brendan O’Connor is trying a different approach to spy hardware: building a sensor-equipped surveillance-capable computer that’s so cheap it can be sacrificed after one use, with off-the-shelf parts that anyone can buy and assemble for less than fifty dollars.

Insight from Davos: How Global Thought Leaders Talk About Innovation

The Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, or Davos, rounds out its last full day of sessions today in Davos, Switzerland. For the last three days, 2,500 of the world’s leaders convened to discuss global poverty, political upheaval, climate change and whatever else keeps them up at night.

Advancement is the unspoken focus of this group, which is “committed to improving the state of the world.” The word “innovation” actually appears 35 times in the 100-page agenda. Compare that to 14 mentions of “governance,” 24 mentions of “war,” and five mentions of “poverty.” ”Innovation” even beats out “political,” appearing 33 times. (These all pale in comparison to the 76 mentions of “economic,” but who’s counting?)
