Rebel blow to Gaddafi as Cameron firms up London conference

Colonel Gaddafi has been dealt a blow, after rebels regained control of the city of Ajdabiya following international air strikes on the Libyan leader's forces.

The fall of the eastern gateway urban centre came after a week of coalition action against Gaddafi's military, which included British and French war planes striking near the city on Saturday.

Overthrow Gadhafi in 90 Days: Just Add Mercs, Cash

The world’s worried about mercenaries in Libya helping Moammar Gadhafi snuff out the Libyan revolution. But what if — what if — the rebels tapped the expanding world of private security to turn them from a ragtag, Red Dawn-esque group of irregulars into a proper military?

No, we haven’t had any sightings of Blackwater founder Erik Prince in Benghazi. But at least some Libyan opposition members don’t think it’s so crazy to hire their own auxiliaries. NBC’s Richard Engel reported on the Rachel Maddow Show on Wednesday that he’d interviewed rebels who’d be grateful for the Blackwaters of the world to offer their services. Erik, call your travel agent!

Libyan Woman Struggles to Tell Media of Her Rape

Libyan woman burst into the hotel housing the foreign press in Tripoli Saturday morning and fought off security forces as she told journalists that she had been raped and beaten by members of the Qaddafi militia. After nearly an hour, she was dragged away from the hotel screaming.

“They say that we are all Libyans and we are one people,” said the woman, who gave her name as Eman al-Obeidy [sic]. “But look at what the Qaddafi men did to me.” She displayed a broad bruise on her face, a large scar on her upper thigh, several narrow and deep scratch marks lower on her leg, and marks that seemed to came from binding around her hands and feet.

Graphic: How deadly is the radiation from Japan?

Yesterday I wrote a piece for The Japan Times about a couple of people who were helping make all the confusing radiation data a little less confusing. In that piece I mentioned @eroninjapan’s effort of visualizing the data using Tableau Public, a pretty slick data-viz software. Since then, Ross Perez from the Tableau team has been in touch to pass along another rendering of the MEXT radiation data.

Japan geigermap: at-a-glance

This map visualises crowd-sourced geiger counter readings from across Japan.

Click on the circles to get more information on the readings in each area.

These readings are aggregated by Pachube here.

Measurements are represented in units of microsieverts per hour ( µSv / h). Original readings used the unit nGy/h and I take the approximation 1 Gy = 1 Sv. (See the Wikipedia entry on Sieverts)
