Report details arms sales to Libya

Italy has sold Libya explosives, gun targeting equipment and other military hardware worth tens of millions of euros in the past two years, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday.

The newspaper quoted an official report from the Italian interior ministry that listed signed contracts as well as ongoing negotiations between Libya and several major Italian defence companies including industry giant Finmeccanica.

Missile systems maker Mbda Italia signed a deal worth 2.5 million euros ($A3.42 million) in May 2009 to supply Libya with 'material for bombs, torpedoes, rockets and missiles', the interior ministry report was quoted as saying.

The Arms Trade is Big Business - The world spends some $1,000 billion annually on the military. How is this so?

As detailed further on the next page on military expenditure, world military spending has now reached one trillion dollars, close to Cold War levels.

As summarized from the Military Balance, 2000/2001, by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (October 2001), for the larger arms-purchasing nations each year:

* Arms procurement is normally 20-30% of their military budgets
* The main portion is usually on operations, maintenance and personnel
* Some 40 to 50 billion dollars are in actual deliveries, (that is, the delivery of sales, which can be many years after the initial contract is signed)
* Each year, around 30-35 billion dollars are made in actual sales (agreements, or signing of contracts).

Gaddafi forces abandon parts of Tripoli

World powers struggled to find a way to stop Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi lashing out at his people as he clings to power in Tripoli, the last big city where an uprising against his rule has yet to take hold.

President Barack Obama signed an order prohibiting transactions related to Libya and blocking property, the first major step to isolate the North African leader, who has used army, police and irregular forces to try to crush the protests.

Gaddafi-Tochter in Wien?

Etwa 15 kamen.

Libya offers reward for info on protest leaders as unrest persists

Gadhafi has lost control of a significant section of the beleaguered country, ranging at least from Egypt's border to Benghazi, more than 500 km away.

The Libyan People's Committee for General Security on Thursday called on protesters to surrender their weapons and offered rewards for those who provide information on protest leaders, in a statement broadcast live on Libyan TV.

Libyan security has cracked down on anti-government protesters and fighting has spread to the capital Tripoli after erupting in Libya's oil-producing east last week with no signs of Leader Muammar Gadhafi stepping down after 41 years in power.
