Excellent Perseid Meteor Shower Expected Aug. 11-13
Every August, just when many people go vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower — the Perseid meteor shower — makes its appearance.
The "shooting stars" promise to deliver an excellent show this year to anyone with clear and dark skies away from urban and suburban lights.
The best time to watch for meteors will be from the late-night hours of Wednesday, Aug, 11 on through the predawn hours of Aug. 13 – two full nights and early mornings. Patient skywatchers with good conditions could see up to 60 shooting stars an hour or more.

The BP Cover-Up
WE'RE SWINGING ON ANCHOR this afternoon as powerful bursts of wind blow down through the Makua Valley and out to sea. The gales stop and start every 15 minutes, as abruptly as if a giant on the far side of the Hawaiian island of Oahu were switching a fan on and off. We sail at the gusts' mercy, listing hard to starboard, then snapping hard against the anchor chain before recoiling to port. The intermittent tempests make our work harder and colder. We shiver during the microbursts, sweat during the interludes, then shiver again from our own sweat.

Alcohol Photographs
These amazing pictures, produced by Bevshots, show different types of alcohol and mixed drinks after the drinks have dried onto slides. The entire process can take up to three months, and it can take many attempts before a clear picture is acquired. The photos show the carbohydrates of the drinks after they have crystallized, forming sugars and glucose. No two drinks look the same, and each photo has been magnified up to 1,000 times in the Florida State University’s chemistry department.

Google Buys Microdrone, Imaginations Run Wild
German publication Wirtschaftswoche (“Economy Week”) says that German manufacturer Microdrones has delivered a cam-equipped flying mini drone to Google. Microdrones boss Mr. Juerss is quoted as saying “We have good chances for a long term business relationship with Google” (is he just overly optimistic? Google wasn’t available for comment to the magazine). According to him the drones “are superbly suited to deliver more up-to-date recordings for mapping service Google Earth.” Another potential use mentioned by Juerss is inspecting wind farms.
