World beard champion, 2009
Meet David Traver, world beard champion.
Traver's 20.5 inches of coarse kink, cultivated over 2½ years and fertilized in Anchorage's northern air, took the title on Saturday.
Traver was among 300 competitors from around the globe who converged here over the weekend for the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. His beard, dyed several colors and woven into the shape of a snowshoe, beat out more than 140 others to become the coolest beard in the world. He took home a commemorative gold pan and a salmon fishing trip.

Church of Scientology goes on trial in France
French branch accused of preying on vulnerable people for financial gain in second fraud case in six years
France's Church of Scientology today went on trial on charges of organised fraud in a case that could lead to the nationwide dissolution of the controversial organisation.
The Church's "celebrity centre" spiritual association and its Scientology Freedom Space bookshop in Paris stand accused of targeting vulnerable people for commercial gain.

It was billed as the one of the most dramatic warnings the world has ever received over the dangers of ecstasy. A study from one of America’s leading universities concluded that taking the drug for just one evening could leave clubbers with irreversible brain damage, and trigger the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
The study, published in the eminent journal Science last September, had an immediate impact. Doctors and anti-drug crusaders spoke of a ‘neurological time bomb’ facing the young. Others suggested that taking one of the tablets was the equivalent of playing Russian roulette with the brain, and demanded tighter ‘anti-rave’ laws to deal with it.

Mexican authorities have arrested 27 high-ranking officials suspected of collaborating with drug-trafficking gangs in the state of Michoacan.
They include 10 mayors, a judge and an aide to the governor of Michoacan.
