Taking Traffic Control Lessons — From Ants
If humans took their cues from ants, they might spend less time in traffic.
When opposing streams of leafcutter ants share a narrow path, they instinctively alternate flows in the most efficient way possible. Studying how ants manage this could provide the basis for a system of driverless cars running on ant traffic algorithms.

Hate Darwin? Then Give Up Your Luxuries
So you’re a creationist or a fundamentalist, whatever. You know what? That’s fine. I don’t really care what you believe for yourself. Personally I don’t think you should be allowed to raise your kids in such a way as I think it’s cruel, but whatever. That’s just me being silly, thinking kids should have a fighting chance by teaching them what is real and how best to get along in the world, not teaching them that there was a talking snake and 2 naked people in a garden that screwed everything up for everybody. Oh, and a man died and came back to life and then flew to heaven and that’s why the kid drinks a sip of wine and eats a cracker every sunday. But oh yeah, Santa Claus was just a story his parents told him to keep him in line. Yeah, makes perfect sense.

Papal Adviser Concedes 'Management Errors'
Cardinal Walter Kasper, who is in charge of the Vatican's relations with the Jewish community, has acknowledged that mistakes were made in the decision to lift the excommunication of a Holocaust denier. A German bishop has called the move "catastrophic" and is demanding an apology and now Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for greater clarity from the Vatican.

Deutsche Bahn AG schickt Abmahnung!

Uncle Sam buys 20 petaflops BlueGene super
The American government's appetite for ever-bigger gobs of supercomputing power has been a blessing for IBM and Cray, and this morning it was Big Blue's turn to brag about two big deals it has scored with Uncle Sam.
The first and smallest of the two machines, nicknamed Dawn, will be installed in the second half of this year at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the Department of Energy's supercomputing centers. LLNL and Sandia National Laboratory do a lot of research and drive supercomputing technology, but their systems are predominantly dedicated to simulating nuclear weapons and their detonation - what IBM referred to as "the nation's aging nuclear deterrent".

Big Bong Theory
So Michael Phelps dove headfirst into the bong water. Is anyone really surprised, after all those laps? There has always been something submerged and escapist about the world's greatest swimmer. When presented with a chamber containing a hazy translucent liquid, he did what's become second nature to him. He buried his face in it.

Do you want to know why Michael Phelps smokes weed?
I was going to stay off the Michael Phelps story, especially the part where people are claiming that Phelps betrayed himself and his admirers, but after watching the following clip from “The View”, I changed my mind.
