An Olympic Souvenir You Don’t Want: Goldfish In A Key Ring

A plastic bag with a picture of Huan Huan, one of the cartoon mascots of the Games, on the outside. And inside: a live goldfish. The bag is part of a plastic key ring. According to the Telegraph story, the bags are sealed, so the fish live in a small pool of water, with little access to air, and no food whatsoever. The goldfish key rings are, of course, not a piece of official Olympic merchandise.

Codgepiece

Once upon a time, The Old Codger made such a menace of himself around here that he actually tricked us into turning him into some sort of WFMU mascot for a little while. We snapped out of his damn spell, but not before he'd hijacked half the record library and insinuated himself into as many album covers as he could find a place for himself, just to spite the medium! My apologies for the really ugly ones, but what do you expect from a guy who's idea of arresting visuals is a snazzy wall-calendar?

Even Lawyers Are Confused About What's Legal Or Not In The Prince/Radiohead Spat

We were just discussing how copyright has been stretched and twisted so many times that it really just isn't designed properly to handle internet communications -- and a good case in point may be the funny little spat we covered a few weeks back between Prince and Radiohead. If you don't recall, Prince performed a cover of a Radiohead song at a concert. Someone in the audience videotaped it and put the video on YouTube.

Kucinich Vows to Keep Up Impeachment Fight

The House voted today by a comfortable margin to refer 35 articles of impeachment against President Bush to the Judiciary Committee, as the measure's chief sponsor vowed to bring the issue up again if the panel does not agree to hold hearings.

On a 251-166 vote, the chamber elected to refer Rep. Dennis Kucinich's (D-Ohio) resolution to the Judiciary panel. All 227 Democrats present voted in favor of the referral, along with 24 Republicans -- a big boost from the four GOP lawmakers who voted for referral of charges against Vice President Cheney back in November.

'Special Weapons' Have a Fallout on Babies

Babies born in Fallujah are showing illnesses and deformities on a scale never seen before, doctors and residents say.

The new cases, and the number of deaths among children, have risen after "special weaponry" was used in the two massive bombing campaigns in Fallujah in 2004.

After denying it at first, the Pentagon admitted in November 2005 that white phosphorous, a restricted incendiary weapon, was used a year earlier in Fallujah.
