Tom Cruise not happy about new strain of weed named after him
Actor/scientologist/couch jumper Tom Cruise is reportedly miffed that a new strain of medical marijuana has been nicknamed in his dubious honor. The weed, dubbed “Tom Cruise Purple” on the street, reportedly is so potent, it makes you see things that aren’t there. Although, since it’s named for Cruise, it should make you dance around your house in your underpants and socks to “Old Time Rock n’ Roll.” Cruise, who has been embarrassingly vocal about his objection to prescription drugs, isn’t flattered by the moniker and wants his legal team to put the kibosh on it, according to rumors.

Kirlian Photography Device from Images Scientific Instruments
While one could make their own version of a Kirlian photography rig to imprint the outline of electrical charges onto film, Images Scientific Instruments is happy to sell you an all-in-one unit for just $300. Their model even includes a 1/4-inch jack that will accept a footswitch to keep you a healthy distance away from the high-voltage unit.

Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction.
"It's crazy, it's just crazy," Mr Clark, who lives in North Potomac, Maryland, was quoted as saying by the Baltimore Sun newspaper.

Throwing bones in the air as 2001 turns 40
STANLEY KUBRICK's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY had its world premiere April 2, 1968, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C. Which would mean that Roger Ebert had been in the Sun-Times pages for just over a year when this review ran: "It was e. e. cummings, the poet, who said he'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance. I imagine cummings would not have enjoyed Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which stars dance but birds do not sing. The fascinating thing about this film is that it fails on the human level but succeeds magnificently on a cosmic scale."

Procol Harum wins back "Whiter Shade" rights
Procol Harum founder Gary Brooker on Friday won his court battle over royalty rights to the band's most famous hit, the 1967 song "A Whiter Shade of Pale."
In 2006 London's High Court awarded former keyboard player Matthew Fisher 40 percent of the copyright of the track, which has sold an estimated 10 million copies worldwide, after he successfully argued that he wrote the organ music to the song.

Rolling Stones Kick Off YouTube's 'Living Legends' Q&A Series
Dying to know where Mick Jagger learned his trademark swagger? Or whether Keith Richards will cameo in any more Pirates of the Caribbean movies?
Here's your chance to find out.
YouTube kicked off its latest interactive project, "Living Legends," on Friday by inviting users to submit burning questions to the British rockers via video.
So far, the uploaded video responses consist largely of users pleading for the Stones to play in their hometowns, but a couple get creative in their delivery. A few of the video submissions morph into lengthy tributes to the band, which are almost guaranteed to be more entertaining than Jagger's and Richards' responses.

Researchers Cram 20-Second Clarinet Solo into Sub-Kilobyte File
A quest by researchers at the University of Rochester resulted in a 20-second clarinet solo being compressed into less than a single kilobyte of data -- nearly 1,000 times smaller than a standard MP3 representing the same audio.
We obtained permission to post the results. They're available as WAV files for easy comparison.
