Status of the world's censorware

Here's a page listing status of the invisible systems used by governments and ISPs around the world to "block child pornography." The lists of "child porn" are generally secretly compiled and held, and the blocks often simply return a timeout or 404 error, so it's virtually impossible to determine whether a given page is being filtered by the system. The potential for abuse is incredible, since pages that get added to the list effectively disappear and there's practically no way to appeal the censors' decision (what's more, if you do appeal and lose, you're branded a pedophile).

Should P2P filesharers be paid for filesharing?

Take that, pigopolists! A novel idea has been proposed to take the fight to the RIAA and the BPI. Since P2P filesharing has a discovery element which permits people to discover new music at no cost - why shouldn't filesharers be compensated for filesharing?

The idea was floated on the Open Rights Group discussion list earlier this month.

Building a Green PC

Ars Technica has put together a green DIY system building guide. The idea is to build a PC offering decent energy efficiency as well as solid performance. The 'Green Gaming Box' draws about 125W at full load (not including a monitor); the minimalist 'Extreme Green Box' uses a mini-ITX case and a VIA CPU-motherboard combo for about 30W at typical load. If you want to mix and match components, or modify your current system so that it uses less energy, there are plenty of options for swapping out individual components.

Taliban wants cell phone networks shut down at night

The towers and offices of mobile phone operators in Afghanistan are being pressured to shut down operations at night by the Taliban. The former rulers of Afghanistan and current insurgent group held "talks" with the four major mobile companies in Afghanistan today, and gave them three days to go dark for 14 hours per day—or else.

Music has been used in American military prisons and on bases to induce sleep deprivation, "prolong capture shock," disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams.
