Top 10 Discoveries of 2007

Hardly week goes by without a major archaeological discovery or the publication of a radical new theory about the human past. Reducing a year's worth of these stories to the 10 most important was a tall order, especially since our intent was to go beyond the headlines and select those we thought made a significant impact on the field--ones that will be talked about for decades.

Dolphins speak a contextual language

Listen to dolphins whistling to each other and you could be forgiven for thinking that they are having a conversation. Now we're a bit nearer to understanding what they might be saying, thanks to a project that has distinguished nearly 200 different whistles dolphins make and linked some of them to specific behaviours.

FBI Apparently Believes That Court Orders Are For Suckers

Wired's invaluable Ryan Singel has been panning for gold in the muddy stream of FBI e-mails and other documents recently obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation under a Freedom of Information Act request, and has already hit a couple of intriguing nuggets, such as overeager agents' willingness to bypass court-order requirements when seeking cell phone records. Plexiglas-like DVD to hold 1TB of data

At the upcoming CES conference in Las Vegas, one company plans to demonstrate the ability to store half a terabyte of data on a DVD disc that is made of a polymer similar to Plexiglas.

Israel-based Mempile Inc. said its TeraDisc DVDs will offer 1TB of storage for consumers in the next few years -- and corporations will be able to use the technology to permanently store data at a fraction of the price of spinning disk and tape, according to Dr. Beth Erez, Mempile's chief marketing officer. Today's high-definition DVDs hold a maximum of 50GB in formats such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

At least NORAD is tracking Santa Claus

In light of this week’s government-level UFO banter in Tokyo, it’s kinda fitting that the 100th Monkey Effect was conceived in Japan.

You remember that one, right? Scientists studying simian behavior on Koshima Island in the 1950s supposedly noticed how an 18-month old female monkey started rinsing off sweet potatoes in a stream before eating them.

She teaches a few adults to emulate her; more join in. Next thing you know, the numbers indulging this new activity reach a critical mass of, say, 100, and — bingo — the entire population is washing its sweet potatoes.
