Global effort on World Aids Day
President George W Bush has urged the US Congress to authorise the doubling of financial aid to combat HIV/Aids to $30bn (£15bn) over the next five years.
"We will turn the tide against HIV/Aids once and for all," he said, adding that he would visit Africa during 2008.
He spoke as millions of people around the world prepared for World Aids Day.

Concern over HIV homeopathy role
Doctors and health charities have expressed concern about a conference which will examine the role of homeopathy in treating HIV.
The event includes discussion of what have been described as "healing remedies" for HIV and AIDS.

24th Chaos Communication Congress (24C3) - Full steam ahead
The 24th Chaos Communication Congress (24C3) is the annual four-day conference organized by the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). It takes place at the bcc Berliner Congress Center in Berlin, Germany. The Congress offers lectures and workshops on a multitude of topics and attracts a diverse audience of thousands of hackers, scientists, artists, and utopians from all around the world. The 24C3s slogan is Volldampf voraus! – the German equivalent of “full steam ahead” – a particular request for talks and projects featuring forward looking hands-on topics.

Der Bundesrat hat heute morgen der Vorratsdatenspeicherung zusammen mit dem neuen Telekommunikationsüberwachungsgesetzt wie erwartet zugestimmt. Allerdings fand die Empfehlung des Rechtsausschusses, doch bitte später über die anstehende Urheberrechts-Novelle eine direkte Auskunftspflicht an private Unternehmen einzuführen, keine Mehrheit.

Police: Hershey candy looks like drugs
New mint packets being sold by The Hershey Co. look nearly identical to the tiny heat-sealed bags used to sell illegal powdered drugs like crack, heroin and cocaine and glorify the drug trade, a Philadelphia police official said.
Ice Breakers Pacs, nickel-sized dissolvable pouches with a powdered sweetener inside, hit store shelves in November. The packets, which come in blue and orange plastic slide-up cases, are similar enough to drug packets that a child familiar with the candy could mistakenly swallow a heat-sealed bag of drugs, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector William Blackburn told the Philadelphia Daily News for an article published Friday.

China targeting all 'enemy space vehicles' including GPS satellites
China’s anti-satellite and space warfare program includes plans to destroy or incapacitate 'every enemy space vehicle' that passes over China.
The annual report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, released last week, listed among Beijing's goals that of ensuring that Chinese space weapons are “conducted covertly so China can maintain a positive international image.” China has called for a ban on space weapons at the United Nations.

Tibet train carries China troops
China's high-speed, high-altitude railway to Tibet has carried troops to the regional capital, Lhasa, for the first time, state media has reported.
The Xinhua news agency cited unnamed sources in the People's Liberation Army as saying the railway would become "a main option" for transporting soldiers.

US daredevil Evel Knievel dies
Legendary US daredevil Evel Knievel has died at the age of 69, his granddaughter has said.
Knievel had suffered ill-health, including diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis - an incurable lung condition - for several years.
He underwent a liver transplant, after nearly dying of hepatitis C, in 1999.
