Winemaking
Jack Keller's winemaking site has not only the basics of home winemaking in 5 parts, but also information on more advanced topics, including acidity, blending, and using a hydrometer. Equally interesting is his extensive collection of recipes for making wines out of things other than grapes, including dandelions and other edible flowers, wild plants (including nettles!), cabbages and beets, tea and coffee, mint, pomegranates, and pumpkins. A complete list of recipes is here, if you'd like to click through alphabetically, and a list of specially-requested recipes is here.

Seeds of rebel's U.S. pot fight grew in Canada
To anyone who has followed the principled opposition of London, Ont. native Marc Emery to everything from a ban on Sunday shopping and potty mouthed rap videos to draconian laws against marijuana possession, his current status as drug martyr facing a possible life sentence in a dank U.S. prison can hardly come as a surprise.
I still remember Emery as the loquacious proprietor of the downtown indie book store, City Lights, during my mid-'80s tenure as a student at the University of Western Ontario.

Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD's Coffin
As counterintuitive as it may seem in this age of iPods and digital downloads, vinyl -- the favorite physical format of indie music collectors and audiophiles -- is poised to re-enter the mainstream, or at least become a major tributary.
Talk to almost anyone in the music business' vital indie and DJ scenes and you'll encounter a uniformly optimistic picture of the vinyl market.
"I'm hearing from labels and distributors that vinyl is way up," said Ian Connelly, client relations manager of independent distributor alliance IODA, in an e-mail interview. "And not just the boutique, limited-edition colored vinyl that Jesu/Isis-style fans are hot for right now."
