Austria OKs terror snooping Trojan plan

Austria has become one of the first countries to officially sanction the use of Trojan Horse malware as a tactic for monitoring the PCs of suspected terrorists and criminals.

The measures were reportedly discussed in an Austrian cabinet meeting last week and turned over to a group of legal and technical experts to thrash out the details of the scheme. Pending approval, Austrian law enforcement officers could begin using the tactic as early as next year.

Top 15 Indie Films

Some of the best films that come out are indie films. These are films produced by independent film makers and they are often (though not always) low budget films. Based upon user voting at the Internet Movie Database (and a touch of my own discretion), this is a list of the top 15 Indie films of all time. I personally vouch that each and every one of these films is outstanding.

One sample identified this morning by GFI, was a heavily distorted 30-second MP3 file. A synthetic female voice was used to promote a particular stock. This voice is distorted to avoid filtering approaches based on the file signature.

Who's More Ethical: TorrentSpy Or The MPAA?

Wired has an interview with Robert Anderson, the guy who hacked into TorrentSpy's servers and handed over a bunch of internal TorrentSpy info to the MPAA. From the interview, it's quite clear that the MPAA knew that it was getting access to content that had not been legally obtained, but it still pushed Anderson for more such info (including asking him if he could obtain similar info about The Pirate Bay).

GigaNews, Usenet Server Dump Anonymous Reference

It seems that the music industry's campaign against Usenet.com has put the spook in a few Usenet providers. Last week, nearly a dozen major record labels, including Artista, Sony-BMG, Atlantic and Elektra, filed a complaint in Federal Court against Usenet.com seeking financial damages as a result of copyright infringement. Although lawsuits against Usenet providers are nothing new, the frequency in which they occur typically prompts a flurry of attention.
