In Großbritannien steht ein Tabu vor dem Fall: Biomediziner erwarten sich grünes Licht für Klonexperimente mit menschlichen und tierischen Zellen. Ziel dabei sind die Schaffung von Hybridembryonen und in weiterer Folge neue Einsichten auf dem Gebiet der Stammzellenforschung. Während sich die Forschung davon langfristig den Sieg über unheilbare Krankheiten verspricht, melden andere massive ethische Bedenken an. Gegner des Projekts sehen die Grenzen zwischen Mensch und Tier schwinden.

Massive Bombenanschläge verhindert
Deutschland ist offenbar nur sehr knapp einer Katastrophe entgangen: Die Terrorpläne dreier am Dienstag verhafteter Männer waren weitaus massiver und weiter gediehen, als sich anfangs abgezeichnet hatte. Die drei hatten laut deutscher Bundesanwaltschaft Chemikalien mit der Sprengkraft einer halben Tonne Dynamit besorgt und bereits mit dem Bau von Bomben begonnen. Ziel einer Reihe gleichzeitiger Anschläge sollten offenbar der Flughafen Frankfurt und US-Militärbasen sein.

Germany foils 'massive' bomb plot
Three men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning a "massive" terrorist attack on US facilities in the country, officials have said.
Federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the three had trained at camps in Pakistan and procured some 700kg (1,500lbs) of chemicals for explosives.

For 15 years there have been thousands of “Made in China” bathtime ducks floating halfway around the world’s oceans. Just recently the armada of yellow rubber friends started to arrive in Clyde, England and are about to begin showing up in the Glasgow river.

Costa del Sol Marinas new target for drug runners
Sports marinas in the Province of Málaga have been revealed to be entry points for much of the drugs which make their way onto the Costa del Sol.
A report in La Opinion de Málaga today says that the drug runners are making the most of the fact that the police only have five agents to cover the 12 marinas on the 160kms of coastline.

Weeds Fires Up Homegrown Video Contest
Anyone who’s watched Showtime’s hit series Weeds is likely to recognize the show’s imminently catchy theme song, “Little Boxes” (”Little boxes, on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky-tacky…”). Each week, a different artist performs their rendition of the tune (past performers include Death Cab for Cutie and Randy Newman; The Shins have recorded a version as well) — now, fans get to show off their own versions. Showtime is hosting a user-generated video contest: Submissions are due by Sept. 14, with the winning song airing on Showtime and its performer(s) collecting $10,000.

All UK 'must be on DNA database'
The whole population and every UK visitor should be added to the national DNA database, a senior judge has said.
Lord Justice Sedley told BBC News the current England and Wales database, which holds DNA from crime suspects and scenes, was "indefensible".
He added it would be fairer to include "everybody, guilty or innocent" on it.

Steve Fossett missing in Nevada
Rescue teams are scouring tracts of Nevada in the hope of locating missing millionaire adventurer Steve Fosset, who took off on Monday in a single-engined aircraft to scout possible locations for a planned attempt on the world land-speed record, AP reports.
Fosset took off at 8.45am on Monday from hotelier Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch, roughly 70 miles southeast of Reno. He hadn't filed flight plan for the trip aboard a Bellanca Citabria Super Decathalon, and was later reported missing by a friend. According to U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials, Fossett has "an application pending for a permit to attempt the land-speed record on federal land in north-central Nevada's Eureka County, more than 150 miles away", but they were unsure if he was considering other sites.
