Forbidden Lego
Forbidden Lego was written by a pair of Lego master builders, who used to work in designing advanced Lego sets (e.g., Mindstorms). While they obviously got to work on lots of cool things while they were there, there were certain projects that just turned out not to be suitable to be made into kits released by the Lego company. They wrote the book to give some kind of a tantalizing hint at the kinds of things that go on behind the scenes at Lego, and the kinds of neat things that might get released in a world without product liability suits.

Feds Seize Cocaine-Packed Submarine
Partially Submerged Vessel Was Carrying 5.5 Tons Cocaine Off Coast Of Guatemala. Four suspected smugglers were operating the self-propelled, semi-submersible vessel when it was located and seized on Sunday evening by officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard.

A leading Colombian paramilitary leader has been stripped of his preferential prison treatment after he allegedly broke the terms of a peace agreement.
The authorities said they had evidence that Carlos Jimenez, also known as Macaco, was continuing to smuggle drugs and run a criminal empire from prison.

Uranus strikes a pose for Hubble's camera
Hubble has snapped a gorgeous shot of the rings of Uranus. The picture is extremely rare because the rings happen to be tilted perfectly edge on to Earth, an alignment that happens just twice every 894 years as the planet orbits the sun.

Zahlreiche Computer in Bundesministerien sind mit Spionageprogrammen aus China infiziert. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Überprüfung durch den Verfassungsschutz und des Bundesamtes für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik. Neben dem Kanzleramt von Kanzlerin Angela Merkel, die sich von Sonntag an zum Staatsbesuch in China aufhält, sind das Wirtschaftsministerium, das Forschungsministerium und das Auswärtige Amt betroffen.

Chinese Company Wants Seagate, U.S. Freaks
Seagate CEO William Watkins says an unnamed Chinese company wants to buy the storage giant and that as a result "The U.S. government is FREAKING OUT," according to a John Markoff piece in The New York Times. Chinese security agencies could use their access to disk drive controller chips to spy or to give themselves an advantage in a future cyber war.

Crypto boffins break car cypher
Cryptographic researchers have identified a practical attack against the KeeLoq car anti-theft cypher. KeeLoq serves as the cryptographic underpinning of several car anti-theft mechanisms distributed by Microchip Technology.
The technology is used in a wide variety of car remote controls from manufacturers including Chrysler, Daewoo, Fiat, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar, Toyota, Volvo, and Volkswagen.
