Soundtrack of a generation plays out final farewell to Mr Manchester
The funeral was organised by the Manchester-based Co-op: what else would you expect for a Manchester man? And there was certain sense of style including a jet black coffin with silver handles and a hearse with, possibly serendipitously, the initials AW in its number plate.
And because this Anthony H Wilson had been one of the most influential music industry figures of our time, there was a suitably eclectic soundtrack: Atmosphere by Joy Division and New Order's first single, Ceremony; Bob's Yer Uncle by the Happy Mondays; He Who Would Valiant Be by John Bunyan; and Hail Queen of Heaven, a traditional hymn Wilson would have sung often in his Catholic boyhood.

Magic circle
The seventh Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is a delightful and beautifully thought-out game. To the gallery's curators, this spiralling plywood and steel eye-catcher, designed by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson and Norwegian architect Kjetil Thorsen, resembles a spinning-top, which is meant to hum with activity from the moment it opens to the public on Friday.

Sleights of Mind
The reason he had picked me from the audience, Apollo Robbins insisted, was that I’d seemed so engaged, nodding my head and making eye contact as he and the other magicians explained the tricks of the trade. I believed him when he told me afterward, over dinner at the Venetian, that he hadn’t noticed the name tag identifying me as a science writer. But then everyone believes Apollo — as he expertly removes your wallet and car keys and unbuckles your watch.

Co-workers put LSD on pizza
A Fair Lawn school custodian is alleging in a lawsuit that his co-workers laced his pizza with the hallucinogen LSD in an attempt to poison him at an office party in 2005.
Dominick A. Rao, a janitor with the district since 2000, was served pizza out of a different box than the other custodians, his attorney, Richard Mazawey, told The Record of Bergen County for Monday editions.

Darker fruits could fight cancer
The compounds which give certain fruit and vegetables their dark colour may contain powerful cancer fighting properties, US research suggests.
Studies on rats and human cells found anthocyanins - which colour red, purple and blue fruits - notably slowed the growth of colon cancer cells.

Diet Coke is 99% Water (And That Is Now a Good Thing)
Back in the day, when people noted that Diet Coke was 99% water, it was an insult. The point was that water was free, and Diet Coke was just free water plus a little bit of artificial this and that — so you would have to be a fool to pay so much for it.
Of course, times have changed. Bottled water now generates an estimated $50 billion in sales each year, with that number growing rapidly. According to this CBS News report, which puts soda revenues at $68 billion a year and stagnant, bottled water is now as big a business as soda.

After Putting Mixtape Creators In Jail, Universal Realizes It Needs Mixtapes
Remember back in January, when a SWAT team, at the direction of RIAA officials, raided the studio of a well known DJ and mixtape artist in Atlanta? This seemed like quite the overreaction to a system that had been known for its successful promotion of many RIAA-backed artists. However, after the DJs were arrested, the entire market was on notice and many mixtapes stopped showing up in the marketplace.

Real time location systems are the new buzz in RFID
A new acronym is being banded around the RFID world - that of RTLS. What is a real time location system (RTLS)?
The simplest definition I have come across is that it is a system of finding the position of assets using active RFID tags. The tags broadcast a signal, which is received by three reader antennas. The time each signal is received is passed on to a software system that uses triangulation to calculate the location of the asset.
At the beginning of August I had a briefing with Josh Slobin, director of marketing at AeroScout, one of the pioneers in RTLS.
