Waldeck - make my day

This is quite something! After nearly 3 years Waldeck releases a brand new 12”. Yes, it´s been quite a long time. For this vinyl only release Dope Noir has selected three tracks from the upcoming longplayer due for release in early summer 2007. Our musical journey begins in the Americas at the beginning of the 1920ies. Tango meets Swing. Delicous cocktails and a live that seems even richer than the thick smoke of Cuban Cigars. The title song “Make my Day” reminds of the days when Al Capone was making a fortune by selling booze.

Prisoner found guilty of masturbating in his cell

It is a verdict likely to cause great consternation to lonely prisoners throughout the US penal system. A prisoner in Florida has been found guilty of indecent exposure for masturbating alone in his cell.

Terry Lee Alexander, 20, of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, was sentenced to a further 60 days in jail on top of the 10-year term he is currently serving for armed robbery, the Miami Herald reported yesterday.

Bids for Keith Richards' unwritten autobiography reach £3.6m

His agent is calling it "the best rock'n'roll book of all time" and publishers obviously agree, as bids for Keith Richards' autobiography reached a whopping $7.3m (£3.6m) at an auction in New York this week.

Anticipation for the as-yet-unwritten memoirs has been building since May, when the Rolling Stone guitarist announced he was ready to put the story of his life down on paper. Fears that Richards may "do a Jagger" and renege on the deal because he can't recall enough of his infamously debauched past have been dismissed by his agent, Ed Victor, who has paired the Rolling Stone with long-time friend and author James Fox for the project. "He's known Keith for 30 years," Victor said of Fox.

Can't Bust This

During his eight-year stint as a cop inTexas—two of them as head of narcotics for the Gladewater Police Department—Barry Cooper made over 800 drug-related arrests, impounded more than 50 vehicles, and seized at least $500,000 in cash and assets. He worked with everyone from the DEA to the FBI to border patrol, earning a reputation as the "best narcotics officer in the state, and perhaps the country," according to a former colleague. So what did Cooper, now married with four kids, learn from his experience?

LESSONS LEARNED FROM AL GORE III

AL Gore III's mug shot appeared in newspapers across the country Thursday thanks to his arrest Wednesday for possession of marijuana and prescription pills.

An Orange County sheriff's deputy pulled over Al Gore III for driving his Toyota Prius at 100 miles per hour. The officer said the car smelled of marijuana. A search found marijuana and prescription pills Vicodin, Valium, Xanax and Adderall.

Here are five observations following Gore's arrest.

Don't speed if you're holding weed.

Cannabis use linked to 40% rise in risk of schizophrenia

Smoking cannabis increases the risk of schizophrenia by at least 40% according to research which indicates that there are at least 800 people suffering serious psychosis in the UK after smoking the drug.

Mental health groups called on the government last night to issue fresh health warnings and launch an education campaign to advise teenagers that even light consumption of the drug could trigger long-term mental health problems. The findings came after a rush of ministers declared their cannabis-smoking pasts and an order from the prime minister for officials to consider whether the drug should be reclassified amid fears about its more potent "skunk" form. Last night the Home Office said the research would be considered in that review.

REEFER MADNESS REDUX

Heard the latest buzz about cannabis? Word on the street is that today’s pot is exponentially more powerful, and thus more dangerous, than the marijuana available some 20, or even 10, years ago.

The nation’s drug czar says so. (“We’re no longer talking about the drug of the 1960s and 1970s,” John P. Walters recently warned Reuters; “this is Pot 2.0.”) Law enforcement says so. (Speaking to the Associated Press in June, United States Drug Enforcement Agency special agent Mark R. Trouville, who heads the agency’s Miami office, said, “This ain’t your grandfather’s or your father’s marijuana. This will hurt you. This will addict you. This will kill you.”) Pot dealers say so. (Advertising to your clientele that you sell only the most potent weed is an effective marketing tool.) Even most pot smokers say so. (Admit it. Who among you is going to tell your friends that you smoke schwag?)

BBC online video service launches

The BBC's flagship online TV service is being launched, offering viewers the chance to download their favourite programmes from the last seven days.

For director general Mark Thompson, the launch of iPlayer is as big a milestone as the arrival of colour TV.

But others have questioned how technically reliable it will be and whether it is late to a crowded market.

At launch, a fixed number of people will be able to sign up, with the numbers increasing throughout the year.

Newsflash: Time May Not Exist

No one keeps track of time better than Ferenc Krausz. In his lab at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, he has clocked the shortest time intervals ever observed. Krausz uses ultraviolet laser pulses to track the absurdly brief quantum leaps of electrons within atoms. The events he probes last for about 100 attoseconds, or 100 quintillionths of a second. For a little perspective, 100 attoseconds is to one second as a second is to 300 million years.
