Alinghi wins the Americas Cup
The Swiss team keeps the cup after beating the Kiwis 5-2 in the final of the competition
The Swiss team Alinghi has won and retained the America’s Cup with a 5-2 final result in Valencia against Emirates Team New Zealand.
The fifth victory, with a margin of just two seconds, in the seventh regatta, and the success of the SUI-100 vessel is little surprise following the wins from the smaller SUI-91 over the past four years.

A charter-boat captain from Lake Charles, La., photographed a rare pink dolphin a couple of weeks ago in Calcasieu Lake, an estuary just north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern Louisiana.

Butterfly Hole Punch Cloud
Hole-punch clouds or fall-streak holes, such as the ones shown above near Shreveport, Louisiana, are caused by falling ice crystals. The ice crystals could originate in a higher cloud or be facilitated by a passing airplane exhaust. If the air has just the right temperature and moisture content, the crystals will absorb vapor as they fall and thus continue to grow.

Judge knocks back NYT wiretap documents suit
A US federal judge has ruled in favour of government agencies' refusal to release classified information related to a controversial surveillance programme.
AP reports that a lawsuit filed against the Defense and Justice departments by the New York Times was dismissed, on the grounds that the information withheld was exempt from the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Rick Graves can stop time. OK, not really, but he can freeze 43 NASCAR racers clocking almost 200 mph. How? The pro shooter modified his Hasselblad into what he calls a DistaCam — adding a high-velocity motor, locking the shutter open, and inserting a metal plate with a laser-cut slit. Whenever Graves triggers the motor, film zips past the slit at up to 1,400 rpm, capturing stills of the speeding cars. "Failure is a necessity," he says, "and a lot of times, success is luck."
