Man sues after plane hits Lamborghini
An Oregon man has sued over a traffic accident that involved an unlikely pair of vehicles - his Lamborghini and a small plane piloted by FBI agents. The propeller from the Cessna airplane mangled the driver's side of the black Lamborghini that Marlowe Treit had given himself as a 60th birthday present in 1998.
Filed earlier this month, Treit's lawsuit against the U.S. government accuses the pilots of negligence in the May 2006 collision, and seeks $105,500 in damages.

Cannabis buyers face biometric testing
Buying cannabis in the Dutch city of Maastricht will soon mean having your fingerprints taken, your face scanned and your biometric data recorded.
All 15 coffee shops in the southern city are spending about 100,000 euros (67,000 pounds) installing a security system that makes it harder for an under-age cannabis smoker to enter than a terrorist to set foot in Europe, according to Marc Josemans, head of the local coffee shop union.

100-foot deep Andes lake disappears
A five-acre glacial lake in Chile's southern Andes has disappeared -- and scientists want to know why.
Park rangers at Bernardo O'Higgins National Park said they found a 100-feet-deep crater in late May where the lake had been in March. Several large pieces of ice that used to float atop the water also were spotted.

Jonas Odell The Hours [video]
I think one of the reasons Jonas’ work is so interesting is because he juxtaposes unexpected imagery in ways that seem to make some kind of strange sense. Skulls and flowers and absurd machinery all seem to work together, dancing a macabre jig choreographed by a madman.

Pump-and-dump scammers issue German prospectus
The fraudsters behind pump-and-dump stock spams are trying a new technique in a bid to fool spam filters. Junk mails promoting worthless stocks seen this week are appearing with an attached PDF file.
Typically titled "German Stock Insider", these PDF files purport to offer insider tips and contain more detail than is generally the case in typical pump-and-dump scams, even going to the bother of adding logos and the like for added "authenticity".

DrinkorDie warez leader jailed for 51 months
It took a while, but US Customs today got their man: Hew Raymond Griffiths, a ringleader of the infamous warez group DrinkorDie, was sentenced today to 51 months in a US prison.
To recap, Griffiths, a 44 year-old British national, specialised in cracking software and distributing working versions over the internet - for free. In 1999, he stupidly boasted to an online publication that he controlled the world's 20 biggest warez servers and that he would never be caught.

Lessig moves on
" Finally, I am not (as one friend wrote) "leaving the movement." "The movement" has my loyalty as much today as ever. But I have come to believe that until a more fundamental problem is fixed, "the movement" can't succeed either. Compare: Imagine someone devoted to free culture coming to believe that until free software supports free culture, free culture can't succeed. So he devotes himself to building software. I am someone who believes that a free society -- free of the "corruption" that defines our current society -- is necessary for free culture, and much more. For that reason, I turn my energy elsewhere for now. "

Wiener Stadtwerke vs Owen Pallett
Wiener Stadtwerke are the leading water, gas and electricity provider in Vienna, Austria. They also provide public transportation and run a huge undertaking business...
Well, those who live in Vienna and watch TV or go to the movies sometimes, have probably seen the new commercials. Here's the song they use: www.wienerstadtwerke.at They claim that the name is "Wohlfühlsong" (=feel good song) by an artist named NASCO. I tried Googling that artist, but nothing came up.
And now compare the song to the beginning of Final Fantasy's "This is the Dream of Win & Regine." Here's the video: www.youtube.com
You will probably agree that the two sound very much alike!
Final Fantasy is a Canadian one-man-project by violin player/singer/songwriter Owen Pallett. He recorded "This is the Dream of Win & Regine" for his 2005 debut album "has a good home c.d." He sued.
If you would like to support Owen Pallett and tell Wiener Stadtwerke what you think of all this, there is a handy "Kontakt" link on the top right corner of www.wienerstadtwerke.at
But mostly, I'm just posting it to make people aware of what's going on...

Manu Chao Makes The Most Of Rare Appearance
When singer/guitarist Chao and his Radio Bemba Sound System band (comprised of a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, drummer and percussionist) arrived, three of them were already shirtless, no doubt knowing what a hot and sweaty show they were in for. Everyone on stage was jumping during the opening number, and periodic leaping broke out throughout the night both on stage and in the crowd. While the sextet urged fans to sing, dance, clap and thrust their fists in the air, they needed no prompting. This was no average placid Toronto rock show audience, and you can probably chalk up its exuberance to the large European and Latin contingent in the house as well as the high-energy music.
