A modestly dressed Mexican with a taste for expensive cigars, baseball memorabilia and bonsai trees has overtaken the American investor Warren Buffett as the world's second richest man and is quietly closing in on Bill Gates as the richest man on the planet.
Carlos Slim, a magnate whose empire supplies Mexicans with everything from cheap flights to cigarettes, has seen his fortune soar by more than $4 billion (£2.02 billion) in two months to $53.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

A software 'fix' sent up to NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft in June 2006 ultimately led to its failure five months later, a preliminary new report reveals. The report also finds that the existing procedures used by the mission team were not thorough enough to catch the resulting problems, and that reductions in budgets and staff may have played some role in the loss of the mission.

Global Air Pollution
The only way to get a complete picture of air pollution around the globe is to measure it from space. This new image compiles data from 18 months of observations by the European Space Agency's Envisat satellite.
It shows concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a mostly man-made gas that comes from power plants, heavy industry, trucks and the burning of biomass. Lightning in the air and microbial activity in soil also produce NO2, which can cause respiratory problems.

Brain, not heart, causes high blood pressure: researchers
The brain, not the heart is responsible for high blood pressure, according to details of a study by British researchers released Sunday.
The scientists said that hypertension, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney damage, is an inflammatory vascular disease of the brain rather than the heart, as previously thought.
They discovered that a protein located in the brain, JAM-1, trapped white blood cells, which can then cause inflammation and obstruct blood flow, leading to poor oxygen supply to the brain.

Sea lion attacks Australian girl
A teenage girl has been attacked by a sea lion while surfing behind a speedboat off Australia's west coast.
Ella Murphy, 13, suffered cuts to her throat, a broken jaw and lost three teeth when the mammal leapt out of the sea and mauled her.
