Burning Man 2006 - Best Burn Ever!
After four years at Burning Man, I've gained some confidence in what to expect on the playa. After living through wind storms, failed structures and stolen art, I realize there's a downside.
But having discovered the amazing positive energy, community and serendipity that pervades the experience, I knew the odds were in my favor.

Don't buy our album, beg Deep Purple
Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan has refreshingly asked fans not to buy an "awful" re-released album of the band live at Birmingham's NEC, the BBC reports.
The sub-standard 1993 offering - thrillingly entitled "NEC 1993" - was, Gillan lamented, "an unfortunate reminder of one of their worst ever concerts". The singer fingered tensions within the band for the performance. He said that "he and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore were barely on speaking terms at the time of the concert", and admitted: "It was one of the lowest points of my life - all of our lives, actually."

Haifisch in der Vöckla
Kaum zu glauben ist der Fund von Hauptschülern am Ufer der Vöckla in Vöcklabruck. Dort trieb ein Hai im Wasser. Wer den Raubfisch entsorgt hat, ist noch nicht geklärt.

Volcanic Italian island on alert
Emergency plans have been put into operation after two new craters opened on the summit of the volcanic Italian island of Stromboli.
One of the new lava streams created on the island, just north of Sicily, has already started flowing into the sea.

IN the depths of a limestone cavern, near a doorway to the Maya underworld, Filomeno Tomay took out a flashlight and held it up to the cave wall. “Es un caballo,” he said softly. (“This is a horse.”)
Mr. Tomay, a stout 66-year-old Maya guide, stood deep inside Cenote Dzitnup, wielding a yellow beam for tourists to reveal a gestalt of conjured shapes on a wall of burled stone.
