World Press Photo Award 2006


Our mission is to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and to promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information. World Press Photo aims to support professional press photography on a wide international scale. Promotional activities include an annual contest, exhibitions, the stimulation of photojournalism through educational programs, and creating greater visibility for press photography through a variety of publications.

No sleep means no new brain cells


Missing out on sleep may cause the brain to stop producing new cells, a study has suggested.

The work on rats, by a team from Princeton University found a lack of sleep affected the hippocampus, a brain region involved in forming memories.

If whales can communicate by telepathy, why can't humans?

Acid attack on whaling ship


Anti-whaling activists have poured acid on the decks of a Japanese whaling ship in the Southern Ocean, injuring two crew members.

Japan expressed outrage, saying it was a "piratical, terrorist act".
