The Art Of Science 2006

In the spring of 2006 we again asked the Princeton University community to submit images—and, for the first time, videos and sounds—produced in the course of research or incorporating tools and concepts from science. Out of nearly 150 entries from 16 departments, we selected 56 works to appear in the 2006 Art of Science exhibition.

Top 10 Sex Stories of 2006

If the year in major sex stories were to be written like a Craigslist personal ad, it would sound something like this:

"Horny Einstein with HPV seeks a little Girls Gone Wild action in space. No sex toys, please, as they are toxic, but respond to this CL ad if you want to play Justice Department and get all up in my 2257, if domain names are your kink, and you love the Matrix but fantasize most about Neo's secret lingerie drawer. No griefers."

On Christmas day, the number of bots tracked by the Shadowserver group dropped nearly 20 percent.

The dramatic decrease in weekly totals--from more than 500,000 infected systems to less than 400,000 computers--puzzled researchers. The Internet Storm Center, a threat monitoring group managed by the SANS Institute, confirmed a drop of about 10 percent.

Best Mash-Ups of 2006

One of the coolest musical innovations in recent memory is the mash-up. For those that may not be familiar with the term, it can best be described when you take the vocals from one song and place them over the instrumental from a different song. The artform didn’t get as much press this year as it has in past years but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great new mash-ups floating around the internet.

What do you get when you cross a notoriously tight-lipped computer company with rabidly fanatical users? A whole lot of gossip, speculation and hearsay, that's what. Vista's Suicide Bomb: who gets hurt?

If you read just one thing over the holiday break, make sure it's Peter Gutmann's cost analysis of Windows Vista, that we noted here. It's an eye opening 20 minutes.

Gutmann describes in great detail the various measures Microsoft has taken to lock down Windows on behalf of Hollywood. This isn't a comprehensive look at all of Vista's DRM - Gutmann barely touches on Microsoft's new activation framework; this is beyond the scope of his enquiry.)
