Mariners report new island in South Pacific
A new volcanic island has risen from the South Pacific near Tonga, according to reports from two vessels that passed the area.
The crew of the Maiken, a yacht that left the northern Tongan islands group of Vava'u in August, reported on their Web log on August 12 that they saw streaks of light, porous pumice stone floating in the water -- then "sailed into a vast, many-miles-wide belt of densely packed pumice."

List of faux pas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Common or notable faux pas in various cultures include:
Austria
- In Austria it is impolite to begin eating before others have been served.
- Referring to Austrians as Germans.
- Opening a door that someone has closed for privacy without knocking or otherwise seeking permission is considered rude and an invasion of privacy.
- Austrians tend to be more reserved than e.g. Americans. They value their privacy more and use phrases like "thank you" etc. more sparingly. They do not hug guests by default. To the unaccustomed ear the German language Austrians use perhaps sounds "harsh" (this also applies to Nordic languages). This does not mean, however, that they are in fact less friendly.
- As is the case in many languages featuring a T-V distinction, addressing someone with the familiar second person pronoun (du) when they should be addressed with the formal form (Sie).

Will the real Borat please stand up?
Turkish Internet celebrity Mahir Cagri is in London to press his case that he is the inspiration for the spoof Kazakh journalist, the creation of British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen whose Borat movie is taking the world's box office by storm.
The 44-year-old's Web site, with its "I Kiss You!!!!!" greeting, made him an unlikely Internet hero seven years ago.
Web surfers were hooked by Cagri's larger-than-life persona, cheesy holiday snaps and prominent nose and mustache.

Champagne parachute?
How come no-one thought of this blisteringly good idea before?? Simply attach the lunar module to your bottle of bubbly (ok not actually a lunar module, but there's a kind of similarity, you know, after you've had a few, quite a few.) Once attached, then make like a lottery winner cum formula one driver and shake it up, firing your cork into the air*.

Cheap nano knowhow cleans arsenic from water
Contaminated water that causes illness and fatal poisoning among millions of people worldwide has been made safe to drink using tiny particles created by nanotechnologists. Scientists at Rice University in Houston are adapting the technique to make it cheap and simple enough to use in developing countries such as Bangladesh, where 57 million people drink water from wells with dangerously high levels of arsenic.
