Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2006
Time Magazine has released a list of what it considers to be the best inventions of 2006. YouTube is the number one invention, but they also list many winners in other categories, like cars, food, and health. For all the geeks out here, there's a Tech Toys category.

Police seize toilet art
Italian police have seized a musical toilet which plays the country's national anthem when flushed.
Prosecutors claim the offending porcelain - produced by two local artists for the Bolzano Museum of Modern Art - should not give forth with the "Fratelli d'Italia" because it's "a national emblem which should be protected".

German ISP Forced To Delete IP Logs
The highest appeal court in Germany has decided that T-Online, one of the largest German ISPs has to delete all IP logs to guarantee the privacy of their customers. This ruling makes it impossible for anti-piracy organizations to trace an infringing IP-address back to a customer of T-Online, once their dynamic IP address has changed.

Bis 2007 sollen die EU-Länder eigentlich Gesetze beschließen, die die vorsorgliche Speicherung von Internet-Verbindungsdaten regeln. Monatelang sollen die Surf-Spuren aller Nutzer gespeichert werden. Jetzt entschied der Bundesgerichtshof: Das ist mit geltendem Recht nicht zu vereinbaren.

Why you get fake wasabi at Japanese restaurants
When dining and served wasabi with your sushi, the wasabi you are served is not always what it seems. Due to a high demand and limited supply, what is often served with your sushi is a mix of American horseradish, mustard and coloring, which the Japanese call seiyo (“western wasabi”). This is because real wasabi can be hard to find or very expensive outside Japan (up to $100/lb). If you would like to be sure what you have, you can ask your wait staff if what you are served is 'real wasabi' and if not, if it is available. If you are served putty, more than likely it is not real. Real wasabi is grated (traditionally on a sharkskin grater called an oroshi) and looks as such. Fake wasabi is not and does not. Just ask your wait staff for 'fresh wasabi' and if they have the real thing, they will usually return with a dish with a grated pile of the real thing, which is a very different experience from fake wasabi.

Microsoft launches Google Earth killer
Microsoft is about to upgrade its mapping product, Live Local, to Microsoft Virtual Earth, a competitor to Google Earth. We got a live preview of the product a few days ago and will have a hands-on review shortly. These impressions are based on the demo.
