Firefox 2 Downloads Top 2 million in 24 Hours
Firefox 2.0 has had over two million downloads in 24 hours with a peak rate of over 30 downloads a second. This means Firefox is well on track to beat IE7's three million in four days. Of course stats don't equal users but it's interesting to see that the demand for Firefox is currently outstripping IE.

RIAA Still Not Allowed To Get Free Access To Scour Your Hard Drive
Last month, the RIAA tried to explain to a court why it would not accept a neutral independent examiner's report on whether or not a particular hard drive from a woman accused of file sharing actually contained the files. Instead, they wanted their own expert to have full access to the hard drive.

New Glowing Mushrooms Found in Brazil
Like a black light poster come to life, a group of bioluminescent fungi collected from Ribeira Valley Tourist State Park near São Paulo, Brazil, emanates a soft green glow when the lights go out.
The mushrooms are part of the genus Mycena, a group that includes about 500 species worldwide. Of these only 33 are known to be bioluminescent—capable of producing light through a chemical reaction.

A Growing Intelligence Around Earth
EO-1 is a new breed of satellite that can think for itself. "We programmed it to notice things that change (like the plume of a volcano) and take appropriate action," Chien explains. EO-1 can re-organize its own priorities to study volcanic eruptions, flash-floods, forest fires, disintegrating sea-ice—in short, anything unexpected.

RIAA battles Barringer-Thomson in Oklahoma, again
Oklahoma based attorney Marilyn Barringer-Thomson is proving to be a giant pain in the tucas for the RIAA. You may remember the case of Debbie Foster, in which Barringer-Thomson beat the RIAA at their own game by making a motion for summary judgment. The RIAA withdrew the case, presumably because they didn't feel that laying their cards on the table was the smartest move at that juncture. The judge in the case allowed the RIAA to withdraw their lawsuit, but ruled that it was "with prejudice", meaning the RIAA is at fault and opening the door for Foster to recover legal fees accrued from her defense.

Mash-Up Masters: Celebrating A Half-Decade Of "Genie-Us"
As you might have noticed, we've been a little mash-up crazy at the Idolator flophouse, a psychosis probably brought on by taking in massive amounts of new music at once.
It's been about five years since the DJ known as the Freelance Hellraiser mixed the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" with Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle," and the result--aptly titled "A Stroke of Genie-Us"--ushered in a new era of slapping together songs.
