Video shows snipers' chilling work in Iraq
Chilling scenes from a videotape made by insurgents show the work of snipers in Iraq, targeting and killing American troops, taking them down with a single bullet from a high-powered rifle.
The graphic video of 10 sniper attacks was obtained by CNN -- through intermediaries -- from the Islamic Army of Iraq, one of the most active insurgent organizations in Iraq.

IFPI encouraged Visa to pull the plug on AllofMP3.com
We reported earlier this week that AllofMP3 has gone on a PR offensive, hiring Qorvis and giving their first press conference to members of the international media. While the conference itself revealed little that was new, a report appeared later that day which said that Visa would no longer process payments from AllofMP3. The timing of the announcement seemed unusual, but the situation has now been clarified somewhat: Visa acted at the instigation of the music industry.

Nowhere to Go But Up - NASA is having a Space Elevator contest
Last October, German high school teacher Joern Lutat had never heard of a space elevator.
Then he listened to a radio report about the first-ever Space Elevator Games in Mountain View, California, where teams entered prototypes of laser-powered climbers. Unfortunately, none of the climbers successfully scaled the 200-foot tether. Lutat thought maybe he and his students could do better.

Stingray jumps aboard boat, stabs man
The incident -- reminiscent of last month's death of TV's Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin -- occurred as 81-year-old James Bertakis plied the waters near his home in Lighthouse Point, Fla., a town just north of Fort Lauderdale.
"It was a freak accident," said Lighthouse Point acting fire Chief David Donzella. "It's very odd that the thing jumped out of the water and stung him. We still can't believe it."

How Firefox 2.0 Will Be Marketed
This week I spoke to Chris Beard, Mozilla's vice president of products. Among other things we discussed how Firefox 2.0 is going to be marketed. I was going to save this for the full write-up of my interview with Chris Beard, but reading Chris Messina's post today about IE7 made me want to address it now.

A Billion Dollars a Year for Pot?
American taxpayers are now spending more than a billion dollars per year to incarcerate its citizens for pot. That’s according to statistics released last week by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics.
According to the new BJS report, “Drug Use and Dependence, State and Federal Prisoners, 2004,” 12.7 percent of state inmates and 12.4 percent of federal inmates incarcerated for drug violations are serving time for marijuana offenses. Combining these percentages with separate U.S. Department of Justice statistics on the total number of state and federal drug prisoners (BJS October 2005 Bulletin: “Prisoners in 2004” – NCJ 210677) suggests that there are now about 33,655 state inmates and 10,785 federal inmates behind bars for marijuana offenses. (The report failed to include estimates on the percentage of inmates incarcerated in county jails for pot-related offenses.)

O’Reilly on Blogosphere: ‘I’d Go in With A Hand Grenade’
Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, political strategist Larry Sabato bemoaned the “blogs on left and right” and “the things they come up with daily, the vitriol, the vile nature of the comments.”
O’Reilly said that he knew “for a fact that President Bush doesn’t know what’s going on in the Internet.” O’Reilly then said, “I have to say President Bush has a much healthier attitude toward this than I do. Because if I can get away with it, boy, I’d go in with a hand grenade.” Watch it:
