Project Blackbox
The Blackbox is a prototype of the world’s first virtualized datacenter built into a shipping container from Sun Microsystems. It can accommodate 250 x64-based servers with 1000 cores, provide 1.5 petabytes (= 1,500 TB) of disk storage, 7 terabytes of memory and handle up to 10,000 desktop users simultaneously.

Wynn Elbowed $40 Million Picasso Painting
Steve Wynn began to tell the story of the Picasso’s provenance. As he talked, he had his back to the picture. He was wearing jeans and a golf shirt. Wynn suffers from an eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, which affects his peripheral vision and therefore, occasionally, his interaction with proximate objects, and, without realizing it, he backed up a step or two as he talked. “So then I made a gesture with my right hand,” Wynn said, “and my right elbow hit the picture. It punctured the picture.” There was a distinct ripping sound. Wynn turned around and saw, on Marie-Thérèse Walter’s left forearm, in the lower-right quadrant of the painting, “a slight puncture, a two-inch tear. We all just stopped. I said, ‘I can’t believe I just did that. Oh, shit. Oh, man.’ ”

Windows virus worms onto some Apple iPods
The company said that a small number of video iPods made after Sept. 12 included the RavMonE virus. It said it has seen fewer than 25 reports of the problem, which it said does not affect other models of the media player, nor does it affect Macs.

Why Woz left Apple - an extract from his new autobiography
AFTER the US festivals and graduating from Berkeley * I went back to Apple as an engineer. I didn't want to be an executive. I wanted just to design circuits and apply clever ideas.
But it was weird because I was in the media mainstream and had so much other stuff to do.

Colliding galaxies make love, not war
A new Hubble image of the Antennae galaxies is the sharpest yet of this merging pair of galaxies. As the two galaxies smash together, billions of stars are born, mostly in groups and clusters of stars. The brightest and most compact of these are called super star clusters.
