Super-atoms

Time to revise the periodic table? Maybe we should, now that we have a new class of chemical building blocks called superatoms—atomic clusters that behave like individual atoms. Motivated by evidence that electrons in groups of aluminum atoms might form closed “shells,” physicists A. Welford Castleman Jr. at Pennsylvania State University and Shiv N. Khanna at Virginia Commonwealth University began searching for stable configurations of these atoms. “We thought if we could figure out some way of taking advantage of this, maybe we could make some new materials,” says Castleman. “Then we found a few magic numbers.”

A Word to the unwise -- program's grammar check isn't so smart

Microsoft the company should big improve Word grammar check.

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. That sentence is a confusing jumble. However, it is perfectly fine in the assessment of Microsoft Word's built-in grammar checker, which detects no problem with the prose.

Sandeep Krishnamurthy thinks Microsoft can do a lot better.

No doubt, you also have a whole stack of those great technical books from publishing house O'Reilly and Associates, like the book Knoppix Hacks by Ars Technica's own Kyle "greenfly" Rankin. So when O'Reilly announced that they were going to be publishing a magazine about Do-It-Yourself (DIY) technology projects for the hacker/hobbyist, there was naturally a huge buzz in the tech community about this. In case you missed out on the hype, let us first start with a little background on this new publication.

Whiskers Go Wild at World Beard, Mustache Games

Rainier Maute, a dashingly whiskered trucker from Albstadt, Germany, plans to compete in the Olympic Games later this year.

It may be surprising that the 48-year-old smoker has a shot at a title. But Maute says he follows a strict training regime to keep in top form.

Each morning the former world and European champion stands before a mirror, where he spends 15 minutes grooming his trim, Kaiser Wilhelm-style mustache. His training gear? "Hairspray … and hazelnut mustache wax."

Linux system squishes into Ethernet connector

German electronics company Kleinhenz is shipping a network-enabled Linux system barely larger than a standard RJ-45 Ethernet jack. "Picotux" is based on the DigiConnect ME module from NetSilicon, along with a 2.4.27 uClinux port that was probably developed by German embedded system specialist FS Forth Systeme.
