A German man who went on holiday left his stereo and lights on so that his pet hamster would not feel lonely in the empty apartment, a police spokesman said on Monday after breaking into it over fears the man may have died.

Govt moves to ban websites promoting suicide
The Federal Government is working to introduce hefty fines for people who promote suicide on the Internet.
Under legislation to be introduced this week, corporations will be fined up to $500,000 and individuals $100,000 if they use the Internet to incite or promote suicide methods.

Wiki Becomes a Way of Life
Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has 490,000 articles -- in English alone. All together, including its French, German, Italian, Chinese, Spanish and many other versions, it has well over 1.3 million entries.
But without its 16,000 contributors, Wikipedia would be about as useful as a moldy 1978 edition of Encyclopedia Americana. With them, Wikipedia has become the world's largest effort of its kind, and one that is compared to Encyclopedia Britannica in terms of quality and breadth.

Cannabis grower asks for more jail time
A Queensland man convicted of possessing and producing cannabis has been jailed at his own request. Campbell asked if he could spend more time in jail to finish a computer training course and start up a chess club.
He was sentenced to three weeks.

Sony preps iPod Shuffle 'killer'
Sony will next month ship its 'iPod Shuffle killer', a compact Flash-based music player with up to 1GB of storage. What distinguishes the Sony product - apart from the distinctly disposable lighter styling - is the integration of an OLED read-out into the player's casing. The device doesn't have a screen as such - track details, the time and tuner station information - appear on the surface of the player.

Paper-like display in two years, says Philips
Philips Polymer Vision, has announced more progress in the area of rollable displays for the mobile-device industry. The new 5-inch PV-QML5 rollable display has a decreased radius of curvature, improved operational and mechanical lifetime and paperlike viewing contrast. These are major steps forward compared to the world's first rollable display prototype introduced by Polymer Vision in February 2004.
