Hand powered iPod Shuffle

Okay, this is what my friends call a "Torronesque" project. This is where I usually come up with something and build it, and it really has no purpose or usefulness- but on further inspection it's kinda neat. This is the iPod shuffle hand charger, actually recharger. There are many "crank powered" accessories floating around, so I thought I'd try a few and figure out if the iPod shuffle can be recharged with one. Well, it can, sorta.

Segway takes to rough terrain

Segway launched three new models on Tuesday of its personal mobility device, the Human Transporter, including a cross-country version and one designed for golf courses. The three vehicles--the Cross-Terrain Transporter (XT), the Golf Transporter (GT) and the HT i180--can come powered by new lithium-ion batteries, developed with help from Valence Technology. The batteries are designed to extend the range of the vehicles to up to 24 miles on a single charge, subject to factors like terrain and payload, the company said.

Euro ministers set to OK patent measure

European ministers are expected to give the OK for the controversial Computer Implemented Inventions Directive to proceed when they meet Monday.

The European Commission has already nixed efforts to send the directive, which would allow software to be patented, back to the European Parliament, effectively restarting the legislative process. This could have enabled the bill to be reworked or even junked altogether.

Firefox extension adds a "Yahoo! Search"

Personally, I like it because it gives me a compact representation of search results and I can get a "bird's-eye view" of 30 results even without scrolling, whereas a regular Web search typically shows me 2 results without scrolling and 10 with scrolling. If the sidebar has focus (if it doesn't, hit F6), then you can navigate with the keyboard by using the arrow keys or the number keys.

Cannabis hilft gegen Schmerzen

Google's secret of success? Dealing with failure

The way Google has been able to build out its computing infrastructure for millions, rather than tens of millions, of dollars is by buying relatively cheap machines. Looking at hardware costs, company engineers saw that purchasing a few high-end servers, with eight or more powerful processors, costs significantly more than dozens of simpler "commodity" servers.

Scientists slam US plasma weapon

The US military is funding development of a weapon that delivers a bout of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away. Intended for use against rioters, it is meant to leave victims unharmed. But pain researchers are furious that work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop a weapon. And they fear that the technology will be used for torture.

Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2

It's been a while since I've covered slipstreaming, or combining, a service pack into Windows (link), but the release of Windows XP Service Pack with Advanced Security Technologies (hereafter referred to as SP2) warrants some discussion. That's because XP SP2 is a huge change from the original shipping version of XP, offering as many new features and capabilities as a major new Windows version. For this reason, many people are going to want to install XP SP2 directly the next time they install Windows, and skip the time-consuming and potentially insecure step of installing the initial XP version first, and then applying SP2 after the fact.
