Where are all the dead animals? Sri Lanka asks

Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Top Tech Stories of 2004

If there were any lingering doubts that we are in the post-PC era, several big stories this year should have cleared them up. The sale of IBM's PC business to China's Lenovo Group and the death of Comdex were powerful reminders that technology is in a transitional stage.

Lost HHGG computer game

In 1998, work started on a 3D graphical adventure game of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The player would be Arthur Dent, starting the story in his house then hitching a lift on a Vogon spaceship, as usual, before spinning off into a new adventure melding ideas from the first three Hitchhiker's books with new concepts. Arthur's ultimate aim would be to obtain a towel from a race called the Towelin Monks (groan) with which he could defeat the Krikkit robots. To claim this towel, he would need to pass seven trials of Courage, Strength, Agility, Faith, Intelligence and Skill.
