Oktoberfest Not Quite As Festive This Year

Bad weather has slowed the party at this year's Oktoberfest.

Organizers blame two weeks of cold, rainy weather for a dip in attendance at the beer-fueled event in Munich, Germany. It attracted about 400,000 fewer participants than last year.

Still, nearly 6 million people downed about 5.5 million liters of beer.

Hundreds of people have flocked to a polluted stream in an overcrowded slum in the Philippine capital after some residents found gold nuggets, witnesses say. A village chief said it was a puzzle as to how the nuggets got into the trash-strewn and heavily silted channel.

"It is puzzle. All we got from this before was trash," he said.

Theater showing 'Anacondas' hunts for movie-going snake

No, it's not a 3-D creature feature: A Houston movie theater — one that was showing Anacondas among other films — has shut down while workers hunt for an 8-foot snake.

A maintenance worker said he saw a snake about a week ago that was thick as a man's arm slithering along a wall, said Terrell Falk, a spokeswoman for Cinemark USA Inc.

Who tracks the trackers?

It's apparently okay for RFID tag promoters to watch you apply lipstick from 750 miles away, but not for a privacy advocate to keep an eye on companies using the pesky technology.

Yes, the cloak and dagger operations of consumer trackers have come under the microscope and it's not to the liking of Frontline Solutions. The conference organizer sent a letter to CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering), requiring that the organization pull down "unauthorized" photos of CheckPoint's RFID tags popping up in clothing from the likes of Abercrombie & Fitch and Champion taken at a recent event here. CASPIAN's leader Katherine Albrecht has refused to gag herself, opting instead to print Frontline's complaint online.

Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam

This is an image of Mount St. Helens, taken from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Observatory and VolcanoCam are located at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano. You are looking approximately south-southeast across the North Fork Toutle River Valley.

The USGS issued a Level III Volcano Alert today, which included the evacuation of the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The VolcanoCam is now the closest operating camera to Mount St. Helens. It continues to function with no problem.
