Sex sleaze threat on Seuss characters


A MAN has tried to extort the widow of legendary US children's author known as "Dr Seuss" by threatening to circulate a painting of his famous characters engaged in sexual acts. In a bizarre case, Charles Augustus Steen, 33, was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to undergo anger management classes after pleading guilty to attempting to extort US$2.5 million ($3.45 million) from Theodor Geisel's widow, according to court records.

Couple Find Cocaine Hidden in Hotel Chair


For a brief time, the Best Western Inn here had a chair worth about $50,000. The chair in room 204 wasn't an antique. Instead, an Ohio couple who stayed in the room Saturday found 4.4 pounds of cocaine in the chair, police said.

2-year-old had lots of cocaine in bloodstream


Police are questioning relatives of a 2-year-old child being treated at a hospital for a large amount of cocaine in the bloodstream.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the child's father first alerted Toronto police. Abdalla would not release the toddler's gender, the parents' identities or other details, including how much cocaine was involved.

Bear rocks out during garden raid


Not even loud rock 'n' roll music could discourage a 350-pound bear that repeatedly raided plums and watermelons from a couple's garden.

Eldon and Gerry Nihues hung a radio from the plum tree, tuned it into a rock station and turned it up loud in hopes of scaring off the bear, which helped itself to about 50 watermelons, including 11 in one night.

Norwegian police officer fights off bird


It was one of the toughest fights Jorun Lyngstad had experienced during her time as a Norwegian police officer. A wood grouse, Europe's biggest game bird, attacked Lyngstad during a Wednesday bike ride in the woods, ramming the off-duty officer from the side and sending her flying through the air, local media reported.

"I suspect this violent perpetrator has, to put it mildly, a strained relationship with the law," Lyngstad, 37, told the newspaper Romsdals Budstikke.

20-Ton Machine Mows Down Rumsfeld's Fence


A 20-ton piece of road machinery mowed down a fence and a couple of trees on property belonging to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld after the brakes apparently slipped and the machine rolled away.

"It was a freak accident," said Michael Trujillo, director of public works for Taos County.

Police Officers Disciplined For Using Taser on Grandmother


Police in Kansas City, Missouri have disciplined two officers and changed department policy on use of their Taser guns after a 66-year old grandmother was shocked by one during an arrest in which she honked her car horn at a police car.
