400 Tonnen schwere Brücke gestohlen


Ein ungewöhnlicher Diebstahl beschäftigt seit Dienstag die Polizei in der nordpolnischen Stadt Danzig (Gdansk). Unbekannte stahlen eine fast 400 Tonnen schwere Stahlbrücke, berichtete die Zeitung „Gazeta Wyborcza“ am Mittwoch in ihrer Regionalausgabe.

Coach fired for 'reasons to cheer naked' T-shirt


Gene Moore, 39, said he was unfairly terminated for allowing squad members to wear T-shirts that listed "10 Reasons to Cheer Naked." He was fired after the University Athletic Association received complaints about the shirts. The firing leaves the squad without a coach three weeks before the first football game.

Turkmen leader orders ice palace


President Niyazov of Turkmenistan has ordered the construction of a palace made of ice in the heart of his desert country, one of the hottest on earth.

It is the latest in a series of colossal building projects instigated by the all-powerful president that seem to defy the country's environment.

"Let us build a palace of ice," said President Niyazov, "big and grand enough for 1,000 people."

India's condoms pop up in the strangest places


Despite a population explosion and a growing AIDS problem, free condoms are being used in unusual ways, writes Rahul Bedi in New Delhi.

Millions of the condoms distributed free in India to combat AIDS and a soaring population are being used for other purposes such as waterproofing roofs, reinforcing roads and even polishing saris, say health workers.

In fact, only a quarter of the 1.5 billion condoms manufactured each year in India were being "properly utilised", said a report by doctors at King George's Medical University in Lucknow.

A bridge too far for Polish robbers


Polish police said on Thursday they had found the remnants of a 200-metre-long, 360 ton bridge which had been stolen and then sold to a scrap metal yard.

Danuta Wolk-Karaczewska, a police spokesperson in the coastal city of Gdansk, said the 1,8-million-zloty (R3,1-million) metal bridge had been packed up in pieces waiting to be taken to be placed when it disappeared earlier this month.

Hedgehogs to dinner every day


Iberia snails, sour cream and eggs beaten with sugar are the favorite dishes served to the young hedgehogs living in Ingrid Solberg's garden in Ulvøya. She has rescued and raised a total of 60 hedgehogs, and 11 of them are regular dinner guests now.

Blazing Bunny Spreads Cricket Club Fire


A rabbit set alight by a bonfire at a British cricket club got its revenge when it ran burning into a hut and set it ablaze destroying costly equipment, the club said on Friday.

Members of Devizes cricket club in Wiltshire, western England, were burning dead branches when a rabbit caught up in the waste sped burning from the flames spreading a fire which destroyed lawnmowers and tools worth 60,000 pounds ($110,000).

Former political prisoners voiced outrage on Thursday at a German company's scheme to sell tourists an authentic jail experience in what was former Communist East Germany's biggest women's prison.

Thousands of women suffered torture and repression behind the walls of Hoheneck castle, a medieval fort perched on a hill above the town of Stollberg in Saxony, used as a jail for political dissidents from 1950 until 1989.

Ghost just a bug


On July 29th, a security camera appeared to showed an object that looked like it was walking up and down the stairs of the Kent County courthouse.

"I've seen it so many times, it's not funny," said Brooke Eyler, general manager of Atlantic Security, which installed the cameras. "It's definitely a bug.", but a ghost investigator wants to look at it more.

South Carolina Postcard Pictured With Georgia Fountain


The Cracker Barrel restaurants in Columbia, South Carolina carry postcards saying "Greetings From Columbia" with a picture of a fountain in the background. Only one problem though..the fountain isn't found in South Carolina, but in Savannah, Georgia.
